Google continues to improve the Gemini AI experience for users by integrating its various features into smartphones. Reading lengthy PDFs takes a considerable amount of time, and it’s especially strenuous to read long-form content on a small phone screen. So Google has integrated a new Gemini feature into the Files app, allowing you to ask questions about PDFs and get instant answers to your queries.

In August, we saw Gemini’s “ask questions about this screen” feature, which can answer any follow-up questions you have about YouTube videos, browser content, and more. Now this special feature has finally been expanded to the Google Files app on Android.
According to Android Police Report,Mishaal Rahman posted on Reddit’s r/Android subreddit.It is said that the feature has now been rolled out to users, but not all Gemini users can enjoy it. If you want to get the “Ask about this PDF” feature, three conditions must be met. First, the phone must run the Android 15 operating system; second, Gemini must be set as the default assistant on the phone; and finally, you must be a Gemini Advanced subscriber.

Discord user Rob shared a screenshot with Mishaal Rahman showing how it works. Unlike the original “Ask questions about this screen” option, the “Ask about a PDF” feature is centered above the Gemini overlay, similar to how Gemini is integrated into YouTube. When it becomes available, you should be able to trigger the feature while viewing a PDF document in Google Files by holding down the power button or using the “Hey, Google” keyword.
Unfortunately, this feature has not yet been widely adopted, and in my own testing, when I triggered the Gemini assistant in a PDF, I only saw the “Ask questions about this screen” option, which is limited to the currently displayed page and ignores other pages that may exist in the PDF, so it cannot truly address the user’s question.
Hopefully Google won’t keep users waiting too long. Once the PDF query feature is launched, it can help users who need to read large numbers of PDF documents every day quickly summarize and organize content, greatly reducing time consumption.
