Among Taiwan’s shared scooter services, WeMo Scooter’s enthusiasm for expansion is impressive, and it also has many new technological ideas and applications. It was recently announced that the new ARCore Geospatial API, just announced during Google I/O, will be introduced in Q2 2022. Directly integrate Google’s new function of integrating GPS and AR street view functions to achieve higher positioning accuracy into Wemo’s car return process.

At this stage, it has been able to thoughtfully display the parking areas for riders, and even cooperates with parking lots to provide safer and more convenient return location options. However, the most commonly mentioned pain points of this type of service include the inability to accurately guide users to safe parking areas due to inaccurate positioning points when returning the car.

On the other hand, even vehicles and apps reference GPS or mobile cellular positioning. However, in reality, there will still be offset problems (this is the case with civilian GPS), which may cause the vehicle’s last parked location to deviate and make it difficult for the next borrowed vehicle, or the shared vehicle maintenance operation to be inefficient – you still have to go around and guess where the parking location has “drifted”. It’s indeed a waste of time – after all, I wanted to rent it because I was too lazy to walk, and ended up getting tired after walking around for a long time (gasp).

By introducing the ARCore Geospatial API into the application, WeMo Scooter becomes the first shared scooter service application demonstration brand in addition to Lime at Google I/O this time, and also makes WeMo Scooter the first smart car networking company in Asia to use this technology. WeMo Scooter demonstrated the function of activating the AR street view interface when returning the car to realize the function of taking real-time photos to locate and return the car. It is expected that this will significantly reduce the time for renting and returning a car – after all, the positioning will be more accurate!

The press release mentions that “using Google ARCore Geospatial API to import product services, the vehicle rental rate has been successfully increased by 7.5%. The user’s location is obtained through GPS and compared with street view data, which is like putting the user into a map combined with the real world… It improves the convenience of users to rent, ride, and return cars.” It seems that users can expect that after the introduction of this precise positioning function, the accuracy of WeMo Scooter’s overall fleet positioning will be greatly improved.
