Musk’s AI chatbot Grok opens up for regular X users to try
After a year of development, Elon Musk’s generative AI chatbot Grok has finally been opened up to regular X users. There were rumors a while back that Grok had already been made available to general users, but when I tried it at the time, it didn’t work, so I put off introducing Grok until now. But now it’s confirmed that you can use the Grok 2 beta and Grok 2 mini beta models without purchasing X Premium+!

Friends who want to use Grok just need to go to their X account and click Grok in the left toolbar.
After clicking, you can start chatting with Grok. The current interface lets you choose at the very top of the screen whether to use Grok 2 mini beta or Grok 2 beta. Those who want to experience Grok’s exclusive Fun Mode can also toggle it on or off directly at the top.
Current Grok references media content before replying. Although hallucinations won’t completely disappear, people can now verify the facts through the media links provided at the end of Grok’s answers. For example, if you ask when Trump, who recently won the US presidential election, will take office as president, Grok will reference reports from Taiwanese media to respond. If you’re unsure whether Grok’s answer is correct, you can directly click the link to verify.
Everyone can also refer to the same question and see the difference between answers from Grok with Fun Mode enabled and without Fun Mode. The answers are the same—it’s just that Grok in Fun Mode adds a bit of a sarcastic edge. You can choose whichever style you prefer when using Grok.
We introduced this in August of this year. Grok adds a text-to-image generation feature.At the time, only users who had purchased X Premium+ could use it. But now Grok’s text-to-image feature is available to regular users as well. However, Grok’s restrictions aren’t as lenient now—for example, when asked to generate an image of Zuckerberg lying on a beach in swim trunks, it said it couldn’t generate that type of image.
If you’re only using Grok to generate ordinary incantation content, Grok performs quite well.
But currently, regular X users can generate at most four images per day with Grok. Moreover, each model can only be asked six questions per day (including image generation). This means you can only ask a total of 12 questions per day using Grok 2 and Grok 2 mini beta. After all 12 questions are used up, regular users have to wait 24 hours before they can use Grok again.
I wonder what everyone thinks about Grok’s limitations? At first, only users who purchased X Premium+ could use it, so if they suddenly made it free and unlimited for regular users now, that would be a bit hard to justify. But only being able to ask 12 questions a day still feels a bit stingy. Of course, if you want to try it out, you can still head over to X yourself to use the generative AI chatbot Grok, but just remember that right now you only get 12 questions (including image generation), so you should think things through before asking.
