According to Intel’s previously announced roadmap, the next-generation processor Raptor Lake should be improved based on Alder Lake in design, and then the 14th-generation processor Meteor Lake, which changes the architecture. Although it is only an improvement on the existing architecture, Raptor Lake is now considered to be able to continue to develop upwards. Raichu, the tipster, revealed on Twitter that Raptor Lake will have a higher clock speed than the Core i9-12900KS, with a rough estimate of at least a 200 to 300MHz increase. That said, the next-generation flagship processor, the Core i9-13900K, could have a turbo clock of up to 5.8GHz.

Increasing the clock speed is a serious issue for both Intel and AMD. The multi-tasking performance of the processor can start from more physical cores and threads, but the single-core performance has to be increased from the overall architecture of the processor. AMD has conducted an experiment to increase the L3 Cache on Ryzen 7 5800X3D, so that the processor performance can be improved to a certain extent on the existing architecture. Intel currently seems to be planning to implement it on Raptor Lake, perhaps on a clock that consumers will be more interested in.

Increasing the clock speed is the easiest way for ordinary people to understand where new products are faster.

Both Intel and AMD have hit a wall on the subject of increasing clock speeds in the past. The most famous case is the Intel Prescott processor of that year. Although the clock speed was increased, the energy consumption ratio of the processor became extremely tragic. Major radiator manufacturers even used “Suppressing Pentium 4” as their promotional slogan. It was already common knowledge among many gamers at the time that the heat dissipation must be modified whether the computer is overclocked or not.

This time Raptor Lake is an improved version of Alder Lake in design. While the architecture remains unchanged, the process is usually improved. After the process is optimized, the energy consumption ratio of the processor can usually be further improved, and the processor clock naturally has room for growth. Therefore, if it is said that Raptor Lake will have a clock increase of 200 to 300 MHz, I think it is reasonable.

Raptor Lake can be regarded as the Tock in Intel’s strategy of regaining Tick Tock. It mainly improves the Alder Lake architecture rather than redesigning a new architecture.

Aldcer Lake’s current consumer-grade flagship processor is the Core i9-12900K, and its two derivatives, the Core i9-12900KF and Core i9-12900KS. The maximum Boost clock of the Core i9-12900KS is 5.5GHz. If the new architecture will bring a clock increase of 300MHz, then this may mean that the maximum Boost clock of the next generation flagship will reach 5.7 GHz or 5.8 GHz. For Intel, this may or may not be a new milestone.

Raptor Lake’s current highest known specifications are 24 cores and 32 threads, which is much more than the number of cores in Alder Lake.

However, higher clocks often also bring more power consumption. The cost of adding 300MHz may cause the CPU to have an additional 20 to 30 W TDP. Core i9-12900KS operates at the maximum Boost clock, and the TDP reaches 260W. If the Raptor Lake clock is higher, then the next generation flagship Core i9-13900KS (may not be called this model) will require a TDP of 300W. To operate, this will put a greater stress test on the motherboard power supply and the output quality of the power supply.

In addition to the increase in the clock speed of the next-generation Core i9, another revelation is also related to the processor clock speed. This is the news posted by Dr. Ian Cutress on Twitter in February this year. He said that the next generation of Intel Atom will have a clock speed of 4.5GHz or even higher. Intel Atom may not mean much to ordinary consumers. You will probably only see this power-saving processor in NAS or small devices. But even such a power-saving processor has a considerable clock speed increase. Compared with the current Intel Atom clock speed of up to 3.9GHz, it can be said to be an astonishing increase.

Raichu, the whistleblower, currently only uses Core i9-12900K as a comparison object. It is easy to think that the 13th generation flagship processor may have such a clock increase, however. Before Intel officially launches Raptor Lake, these statements are very interesting, but they may not mean that the entire series of products will have such settings. Intel was previously believed to provide a larger L3 Cache in its next-generation processors, but the actual situation will still have to be verified when the official product is released. Perhaps, for now, it is assumed that the new processor will indeed increase performance to some extent. I believe the details will be confirmed soon over time.
