A Tyrannosaurus-level electricity-eating monster? GeForce RTX 40 GPU rumored to have 850W TDP

Although the graphics card market has disappointed many players, the advent of new graphics cards is still exciting. NVIDIA’s currently known next-generation GPU products will be codenamed Ada Lovelace and are expected to debut in September this year. But there is one rumor that is quite scary. Currently, two tipsters Kopite7kimi and Greymon55 have revealed that the new flagship GPU will have amazing power consumption, with TDP easily exceeding 800W. If the rumors are true, users who want to switch to the next generation of flagship cards need to pay special attention to the selection of power supplies:

In response to future graphics card specifications, the CPU already has a PCI-E 5.0 or higher specification bus, and the power supply is also being modified to meet the power requirements of future graphics cards. For example, the 12-pin plug was born for the RTX 30 series graphics cards, and even the 16-pin plug may be launched for higher-power graphics cards in the future.

However, what people are most concerned about is how much power the new graphics card will consume. After all, the electricity bill will be sent to you every month. If the high performance of the new card means that the number on the bill will jump higher, then whether players should spend money to upgrade the graphics card is an interesting issue:

Tipsters Kopite7kimi and Greymon55 have mentioned that future Ada Lovelace graphics cards (possibly RTX 40 series) will have a super power-hungry flagship GPU. This GPU is codenamed AD102 and may eventually be called RTX 4080, RTX 4080 Ti and RTX 4090. The entry-level GPU of the AD102 already has a TDP of 450W. Considering the consumption of other components of the personal computer, I am afraid that when purchasing a power supply, you need to consider a model with a power supply of more than 700W. Not to mention that there are higher-end products above this.

I am not clear at the moment whether one model has three TGP ranges or whether it has three models but the TGP number of the AD102 is 450W-650W-850W, of course this is not the final specification and there may be some deviation.

Ada Lovelace’s hypothetical target is AMD’s RDNA 3 architecture, which players familiar with the hardware market must have heard. In order to compete with opponents, the increase in efficiency naturally needs to be high enough. NVIDIA’s basic goal is to make the RTX 40 series twice as fast as the previous generation, but what grows with the performance is often only the size of the cooling fan and the recommended wattage of the power supply:

As for the internal specifications of the AD102, Kopite7kimi believes that the GPU will have 18,432 CUDA cores, which will be twice that of the Ampere architecture GPU. The clock part will be set to 2.2 GHz, so the computing performance of FP32 is estimated to reach 81 TFLOPs. Compared to the RTX 3090, which has a performance of 36 TFLOPs, it can be considered to be about twice as fast:

Regarding the power consumption revelations, the author believes that the numbers may not be the final version, but two whistleblowers have provided similar numerical ranges at the same time, which makes people believe that their claims are credible.
