Although when talking about RSS subscriptions, one must think of the closure of Google Reader. It makes people wonder whether RSS subscriptions, which seem to be technologically outdated, will be replaced by innovative functional services such as social networking sites. However, what is unexpected is that although some new websites may no longer provide RSS subscription functions, most news-type websites still retain this service. Some people even use the RSS function to support social networking sites and track the latest information of new services through the “old method”.
Recently, even Google, which seemed to have given up on RSS, has once again taken advantage of this website subscription function through the latest Follow function opened by the Chrome browser to provide users with a service to retrieve the latest information from the website.
The Microsoft Edge browser, which chose to use Chromium as its core development, seems to have chosen to follow the trend after that. It is preparing to add similar functions and chose to start providing a “Collection” page that can aggregate RSS subscriptions in the Edge Canary test version – as far as the Flag indicates, it will not be merged with the original collection page data, and you can switch back to the original version at any time.
Although it is, to put it bluntly, a traditional RSS subscription function, this new Edge Canary feature called “followable web” will allow you to subscribe to the RSS service of a specific website through the “Follow” button in the Collection, thereby achieving a more convenient new article subscription experience. Microsoft even stated that as long as it detects that the website supports RSS, it will prepare to display a follow button directly behind the address bar in the future, so that users can quickly subscribe and manage subscribed websites, latest articles and other information in a dedicated tab.
I have to say that I am quite happy to see such a feature being taken seriously again. To a certain extent, it also gives many websites a new way to fight against social algorithms – if RSS can really gain the favor of users again…
