Intel’s Arc G3 Extreme processor, specially designed for handheld gaming PCs, is ready to be tested by the market with the upcoming release of MSI Claw 8EX AI Plus. This chip attracted great attention when it debuted at Computex 2026. Recently, a well-known handheld YouTuber took the lead in reviewing the MSI Claw 8EX AI Plus and gave it very high praise. How did Intel’s first dedicated chip perform in the handheld market? Can it truly challenge the AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme’s dominance in the handheld space? This report will fully analyze the true capabilities of Arc G3 Extreme.

Hands-on with MSI Claw 8EX AI Plus powered by Intel Arc G3 Extreme processor

Intel Arc G3 Extreme: Designed from the ground up for handheld consoles

The core positioning of Intel Arc G3 Extreme is not a chip modified from a laptop processor, but a solution designed by Intel from scratch for handheld gaming PCs. It uses the Panther Lake architecture, built-in Arc B390 graphics core (12 Xe3 cores), the CPU has a 14-core configuration (2 P-core + 8 E-core + 4 LP-E-core), and supports LPDDR5X-8533 memory. In contrast, AMD’s Ryzen Z2 Extreme still uses the existing architecture and has not been completely redesigned for handheld machines. This means that Intel has achieved an inherent advantage at the architectural level, rather than just competing on clock speed or specifications.

MSI Claw 8EX AI Plus appearance and design details

The first device equipped with Arc G3 Extreme is the MSI Claw 8EX AI Plus in a color called Void Purple. The front and back of the fuselage use a laser-etched dot matrix texture to provide an anti-slip effect, and the grip arc has been redesigned. Reviewers described the grip as feeling like an Xbox controller.

MSI Claw 8EX AI Plus is equipped with Intel Arc G3 Extreme processor, 32GB RAM, 8-inch IPS display panel, resolution 1,920×1,200, supports 120Hz refresh rate and VRR (variable refresh rate, range 48-120Hz), brightness up to 500 nits, 100% sRGB color gamut, contrast ratio 1,500:1. CNET Labs measured a peak brightness of 517 nits and a color temperature of 7,300K. The device weighs 785g and measures 321×130×48mm. It has a built-in 80 Wh battery and supports 65W fast charging.

The top I/O includes two sets of USB 4 (Thunderbolt 4, 40Gbps), microSD card slot, 3.5mm headphone jack, power button (integrated fingerprint recognition) and volume buttons.

In terms of control, Hall Effect analog rockers and triggers are used, combined with the new LRA linear resonance actuator to provide stronger tactile feedback. The D-pad was changed to a metal dome switch design, which gives a clearer sense of segmentation. However, reviewers believe that the shape is too sharp and it would be better if it was flattened. The cooling fan is 5mm larger than the previous generation, and combined with a wider TDP range ensures that long-term gaming will not drop the frequency.

The box comes with a Thunderbolt docking station (I don’t know if it is standard), equipped with a full-size SD card reader and 80W power output, allowing the handheld device to instantly transform into a desktop host when connected to a large screen. It also supports Wi-Fi 7 and low-latency Bluetooth 6.0, the latter of which can be used with wireless headsets with almost no delay.

Comprehensive analysis of running score data

Reviewers compared the Arc G3 Extreme with the AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme at 35W TDP in multiple benchmarks. In Geekbench 6, the single-core score is 2,586 points for G3 and 2,716 points for Z2 (Z2 leads by 4.8%); the multi-core score is 13,449 points for G3 and 11,583 points for Z2 (G3 leads by 16.1%).

In Cinebench R24, the single-core G3 scored 118 points against the Z2’s 113 points (4.4% ahead), and the multi-core G3 scored 864 points against the Z2’s 793 points (8.9% ahead).

The real difference shows up in 3DMark Time Spy. The G3 Extreme scored 6,945 points, while the Z2 Extreme only scored 4,127 points, giving Intel a whopping 68.3% lead.

Actual measured frame rates of various games

Forza Horizon 6: 1200p high quality, 25W TDP, does not use any upscaling technology, the average frame rate is about 70 FPS. If reduced to 17W TDP and 800p high image quality, the average frame rate still remains above 70 FPS.

Cyberpunk 2077: 15W TDP, 800p Steam Deck preset, average frame rate around 52-55 FPS, 10-12 FPS higher than Steam Deck’s 42-43 FPS. Upgraded to 1200p, the average is about 41 FPS under the same settings, and can be locked to 30 FPS for smooth operation. 25W TDP, 1200p Steam Deck preset close to 60 FPS. After enabling XeSS multi-frame generation (4X), it can reach 100+ FPS under 25W TDP and Ultra image quality; it can even reach 140+ FPS under 35W TDP. Engadget tested the 35W XeSS performance mode at 95 FPS, and the ROG Ally X with the same settings was only 62 FPS.

Spider-Man 2: 30W TDP, medium image quality, XeSS balanced mode, maintaining above 60 FPS most of the time, frame drops in a few scenes. ETA PRIME points out that this is an optimization issue within the game itself.

Red Dead Redemption 2: 1200p high image quality and Ultra texture mixed settings, 25W TDP, without using any upscaling technology, the game is smooth and playable throughout. This game only supports FSR, not XeSS.

indie games: 8W TDP can smoothly run works such as Mina the Hollower and Silk Song.

Battery life test

MSI Claw 8EX AI Plus has a built-in 80 Wh high-capacity battery, which is one of the largest among all handheld models, even more than many thin and light laptops. The actual measured data is as follows: 8W TDP independent gaming mode is about 7 hours and 15 minutes, which can meet the needs of a full day of commuting gaming; 17W TDP AAA gaming is about 3 hours and 10 minutes; 25W TDP is about 2 hours and 15 minutes; 35W TDP full speed is about 1 hour and 40 minutes. The test conditions are screen brightness 50%, update rate 60Hz, and RGB lighting effects turned on. ETA PRIME said that subsequent BIOS updates are expected to further improve the flight performance, because the driver and BIOS are still being optimized.

Software functions and user experience

MSI M Center has been redesigned to provide three power consumption modes: AI Engine automatically adjusts TDP, Endurance Mode limits power consumption to extend battery life, and Manual Mode manually sets PL1 (up to 35W) and PL2 (up to 45W, which will stabilize after a burst of about two minutes). XeSS multi-frame generation supports three levels of 2X, 3X, and 4X, and can be forcibly enabled through Intel graphics software for games that are not natively supported. Fullscreen Xbox Experience provides an integrated Xbox Game Pass experience that reduces background distractions. Dual Thunderbolt 4 ports can be connected to an external eGPU or docking station, giving the handheld device desktop-level performance for home use.

Pricing and Availability Information

MSI Claw 8EX AI Plus has a suggested retail price of approximately US$1,500 to US$1,800 (approximately NT$48,750 to NT$58,500), depending on configuration and access. ETA PRIME considers it suitable for players with deep pockets. It is currently known that in addition to MSI, other brands are developing handheld devices equipped with Arc G3 series chips.

Conclusion

From Geekbench to 3DMark, from Cyberpunk 2077 to Red Dead Redemption 2, every test data of Arc G3 Extreme proves Intel’s determination in the handheld field. Whether it’s the energy-saving performance at 15W low power consumption or the explosive power of 35W at full speed, this chip can provide the best handheld gaming experience currently. Although the MSI Claw 8EX AI Plus is expensive, it achieves an excellent balance between performance, battery life and design. It is the current performance benchmark for Windows handheld machines. If we have the opportunity, we will also do a detailed test report.
