Many people nowadays travel abroad, and for those who aren’t fluent in foreign languages, communication concerns are inevitable. Felo Translator is an app that was just launched recently, so not many people are using it yet. Currently there are no restrictions on usage — it’s completely free — but this may change to a paid model once the user base grows. Besides for travel, it can also serve as a real-time translation tool for watching foreign videos, listening to foreign radio, lectures, and more.
When you open it for the first time, you will be asked to allow microphone access – make sure to select “OK” here:
Next, set up the bidirectional languages for translation. You can adjust these settings anytime later.
Currently supports Japanese, Simplified Chinese, English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Russian, Korean, Thai, and Traditional Chinese. Here is an example using Japanese <-> Traditional Chinese:
After entering the main screen, it starts listening, with a pause/resume button at the bottom:
When the other person speaks Japanese, the screen provides real-time translation, continuously translating until they stop speaking. The same goes for watching videos—it keeps translating, so you may need to pause halfway through to read the translation, or click the play icon on the right to have it read aloud:
After the other person interrupted, I switched to speaking Chinese, and it really did immediately translate it into Japanese—that was impressive. Of course, errors still occur occasionally, with it failing to recognize correctly.
All translated content can be saved for easy future reference.

However, for conversations, Felo Translator still can’t achieve ultra-fast translation speed, so you’ll need to wait for it to finish translating before the other person speaks. Plus, it sometimes misrecognizes speech. The awkward part is that there’s currently no way to specify the source language for translation, so consecutive recognition errors can really eat up a lot of time.
As for the pricing aspect, the developer mentioned that if too many people are using it, they might add features like API Key, allowing everyone to use their own OpenAI Key. I think there’s a good chance of that happening, since GPT-4 is much more expensive than GPT-3.5, and letting everyone use it for free would be too generous.Editor’s note: Felo Translator recently switched to a subscription model with 30 minutes of free translation time. Everyone can decide for themselves whether to continue using it (it seems there’s actually no limit when you’re not logged in, based on my testing).
