Google Gemini plans to make it easier for you to switch from ChatGPT

Even after more than a decade of smartphone evolution, transferring data between Android and iOS still frustrates many users. Moving contacts, photos, or even apps across platforms is difficult enough, let alone migrating AI chatbot conversations in their entirety. Today, AI platforms like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini operate independently, with no universal export and import standards between them. This means once users want to switch platforms, all the conversations, ideas, and knowledge they’ve accumulated often have to stay locked within the original service.

However, Google seems to be preparing to break this deadlock. According to TestingCatalog Sources have discovered that Google is developing a new feature called “Import AI Chat” for Gemini, aimed at allowing users to transfer their chat history from other platforms to Gemini. Based on currently revealed information, this feature works quite straightforwardly: users simply need to download their chat history files from their original AI platform, then import them into Gemini, and the system will help complete the transfer.

Although this tool still appears to have some limitations—for example, it seems unable to sync or transfer “memory” features from other platforms (such as preferences, personal background information, and other long-term stored content)—for users looking to switch from ChatGPT, Claude, or other AI services to Gemini, they can at least preserve important conversation context and won’t need to build new AI usage habits from scratch. For those who rely on AI to assist with work, creative tasks, or research, this is undoubtedly a useful upgrade.

Currently, Google has not announced the official launch date for this feature. However, since it has already appeared in Gemini’s attachment menu and is marked as in testing, it typically means the official release won’t be far away. In recent years, Google has been actively promoting the Gemini ecosystem, and this kind of cross-platform migration tool also aligns with its strategy to expand its user base.

Beyond the chat import feature, Google is also upgrading Nano Banana Pro, the image generation model in Gemini. Users will be able to download generated images in 2K or 4K resolution, with two output options: “Recommended Size” for social sharing, and “Maximum Size” for printing or professional use. Since the Gemini app currently generates 2K images by default using Nano Banana Pro, the addition of the 4K option is a highly anticipated upgrade for designers, creators, or professionals who need high-resolution materials.

Additionally, Google appears to be developing a new tool called “Portrait”. While details remain unclear, based on the description, it may be related to verifying the authenticity of AI-generated videos, potentially helping to identify whether videos were created by AI, whether they’ve been altered, and could even become an important tool in combating Deepfakes in the future. Since this feature still appears to be in early development, it may still take some time before its official release.

Overall, Google is building a more complete and mature ecosystem for Gemini: from cross-platform chat imports and image resolution upgrades to possible content verification tools, these updates show that Google wants Gemini to be more than just another AI chatbot—it aims to be a core platform that can support users’ long-term data, creative workflows, and work needs. For users who are on the fence about switching AI platforms, these new features undoubtedly make Gemini more attractive.
