In November last year, Valve surprised gamers by unveiling its latest PC console product, the Steam Machine. Although it sparked quite a bit of controversy when the price was announced, this latest offering quickly sold out across all platforms. Just recently, many lucky buyers have started receiving the console, however, some hardware issues have also begun to surface.

By last week, several players had begun sharing on the Reddit forum that their Steam Machine consoles had started exhibiting a “Red Light of Death” phenomenon, sparking heated discussions among gamers and even drawing comparisons to the Xbox 360’s “Red Ring of Death.” At the time, many users believed this indicator meant the Steam Machine was completely broken, but after several restarts and BIOS updates, some players who encountered the issue were able to boot up successfully.

It’s worth noting that Valve has actually already been on Steam Support’s “Reference Guide – Steam Machine LED LightThe page explains to players in depth the meaning of various indicator lights, such as when the LED indicator next to the power button shows a white light but the light bar is in the off state, it means the Steam Machine is in standby mode, and players can wake the console using a connected mouse, keyboard, or controller.
As for the “red light” indicating errors, it is also divided into several different situations:
Both the light strip and LED light steadily show a red light:

Steam Machine is currently overheating, with the CPU and GPU reaching above 95°C and 90°C respectively.
The light strip displays the right quarter, flashing and showing a red light.

System cannot detect memory
The light strip shows the right half, flashing and displaying a red light:

System detected GPU fault
The LED strip’s second segment of the left quarter is flashing and showing red light:

System “cannot detect SSD”.
The light strip shows only the left half, flashing red light:

Memory training failed
So the situation this Reddit user encountered appears to be the third type—meaning the system detected a “GPU failure.” This design allows players to quickly pinpoint the source of the problem and work toward a solution. While players can override some less critical indicator lights when customizing the console, when Steam Machine encounters a major issue, the system will always prioritize displaying the corresponding warning red light, ensuring users can’t ignore it when problems arise.

This not only makes it easier for users to identify issues with the Steam Machine, but also allows them to more clearly explain the problem to Valve when contacting customer support; for many serious errors, users are also advised to contact official support directly. As of now, Valve’s Steam Machine officially went on sale last month, with a base price of $1,050. However, according to Valve’s official statement, this is not actually their ideal price, but due to the ongoing global memory shortage, the console’s pricing has ultimately been severely impacted.
