MP3 became the world’s most popular audio format two or three decades ago, and it’s still everywhere today. However, the two major advantages that made MP3 so popular—small file size and “good enough” audio quality—have now become its limitations. The core problem with MP3 is that it relies on lossy compression to reduce file size. This means some audio information is permanently deleted during the compression process, and once it’s lost, there’s no way to recover it unless you still have the original uncompressed audio file.

Stop saving music as MP3! These four formats have better sound quality
At the time MP3 was born, such trade-offs were entirely reasonable. Network speeds were far slower than today, and storage on personal computers and mobile devices was extremely limited, often only a few dozen to a few hundred gigabytes. The situation is completely different now: gigabit networks have become the norm, computer storage is routinely measured in terabytes, and even entry-level phones start at 128GB. In such an environment, modern audio codecs outperform MP3 in virtually every aspect—they can either compress without sacrificing audio quality, or achieve the same or better quality than MP3 with greater efficiency.
These four formats are what I most recommend and commonly use, as they are more suitable for modern needs than MP3 in every way.

FLAC is the preferred lossless format.
If you’re planning to build a long-term music library on Windows, Linux, or Android, FLAC is the ideal format. It’s an open-source standard that can fully restore the original audio data and supports up to 32-bit dynamic range. Most importantly, FLAC is completely lossless, so you won’t lose any audio quality details, while also preserving complete track information and cover artwork.
FLAC files are typically about half the size of raw WAV files. While they’re significantly larger than MP3 rips of the same songs, if your goal is to build a high-quality music library or back up CDs, this extra storage space is definitely worth it. To start building your FLAC library, I’d recommend using Exact Audio Copy (EAC) to rip CDs, or purchasing lossless audio files directly.

ALAC is Apple’s version of FLAC.
If you’re using macOS or iOS, Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC) is pretty much the most natural choice. It offers the same audio quality and bit depth as FLAC and is also a lossless format, but it can be played directly on iPhone, iPad, and Mac without needing to install any additional tools. The only downside is that ALAC files are typically slightly larger than FLAC files, and support outside the Apple ecosystem isn’t very stable. However, on Apple devices you can directly rip or convert to ALAC right in the Music app, which is very convenient.

Opus is currently the most efficient lossy codec
If your primary goal is saving storage space or bandwidth while maintaining good audio quality, then you need to know about Opus. At the same file size, Opus consistently outperforms MP3 and AAC; and even at smaller file sizes, it can still deliver near-transparent audio quality. For podcast creators, online audio services, or anyone who needs the best audio quality within limited space, Opus is an extremely attractive option.
OPUS might be the most popular audio codec you’ve never heard of. For example, the following mainstream platforms and services all use OPUS for audio transmission:
- YouTube
- Spotify
- Vimeo
- Netflix
- SoundCloud
- Signal
- Discord
- Mumble
The only thing to note is that some older hardware may not fully support Opus, especially older car head units and early mobile devices. There are many tools available for encoding Opus, but the best starting points are FFmpeg (with built-in libopus) or VLC—both are free, cross-platform, well-supported, and quite intuitive to use. When adjusting audio quality, you can start with a bitrate of around 192Kbps, which usually sounds quite good, then gradually lower the bitrate to find your personal optimal balance.

AAC is a lossy compression standard, yet it still delivers an upgraded experience.
While Opus generally outperforms AAC, its compatibility is indeed more troublesome. If you need small file sizes, good cross-device support, and don’t require lossless format, AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) is a reliable alternative to MP3. Many familiar services, such as Apple Music, use AAC by default on the backend.
At the same file size (or bitrate), AAC easily outperforms MP3 in audio quality, meaning you can achieve the same or even better listening experience while using less storage space.

When choosing an audio format, you need to consider multiple factors simultaneously: What formats do your playback devices support? Do you have enough storage space available? Is your bandwidth limited? Do you need to preserve the audio long-term or use it for post-production work? If your needs include long-term archiving or any form of production work, it’s recommended to go directly with FLAC or ALAC. Among common audio formats, they offer the best balance between file size and audio quality, and are also the most reliable lossless options.
If your priority is saving space or reducing bandwidth usage, you can start encoding with Opus; only fall back to AAC if you encounter compatibility issues. No matter your use case, one thing is already very clear: the era of MP3 has long ended, and it truly deserves to be replaced by better formats.
