Following OpenAI’s earlier release of the new ChatGPT Work feature, they also announced on social media that ChatGPT Atlas will be discontinued next month—and there will never be a standalone AI browser in the future, as its capabilities will be integrated into the new version of the ChatGPT desktop app.
ChatGPT Atlas Support Ending: OpenAI Abandons Standalone AI Browser, Will Integrate Into New Desktop App Instead
Earlier, OpenAI’s James Sun on Xstated: “With these updates rolling out, we will also be gradually discontinuing Atlas. The current target date for discontinuing Atlas is August 9th. Over the next few days, we will share more information through in-app notifications and email.”
Representatives said ChatGPT Atlas will be discontinued in about a month, which is quite a rush. However, existing users won’t need to switch to a new browser, as the new version of the ChatGPT desktop app will have built-in browser functionality, allowing you to switch directly to using ChatGPT.
Since it’s also an OpenAI product, the data conversion shouldn’t be too difficult. We’ll just wait for the official to release more information in the coming days.
So why did OpenAI decide to give up on developing an independent AI browser? James Sun didn’t elaborate, but it’s speculated this is related to OpenAI’s strategy. They previously revealed plans to build a super AI app that integrates all current OpenAI products, and now they’re taking that step. Besides ChatGPT Atlas, Codex has also become part of ChatGPT.
While this is much more convenient for OpenAI users, eliminating the need to install so many separate applications, the growing number of features will also increase complexity. Longtime users may not need much time to get familiar with the new system, but the same cannot be said for newcomers.
As for how good ChatGPT’s built-in browser is, I don’t know yet. The new version of ChatGPT desktop app is still being rolled out, and my account hasn’t gotten access to it yet, so I’m unable to share any experience or thoughts about it.
If you don’t want to use ChatGPT’s built-in browser and want to switch back to Chrome, Edge, or other browsers, you can simply install ChatGPT’s Chrome extension to continue chatting with ChatGPT in the sidebar.
From this adjustment, OpenAI isn’t abandoning the browser but changing how the product is presented. Rather than maintaining a separate, independent Atlas browser, OpenAI chose to consolidate the browser, Codex, work agents, and scheduled tasks into the ChatGPT desktop application, so users don’t need to switch back and forth between multiple tools.
For Atlas users, the key thing to watch is how bookmarks, browsing data, workflows, and other settings will be transferred. OpenAI says it will share more details soon, and with the August 9 cutoff date approaching, existing users should keep an eye on in-app notifications and emails so they don’t miss any transition plans.
