OpenAI recently officially launched the GPT-5.6 series models, featuring three variants with different positioning: GPT-5.6 Sol, GPT-5.6 Terra, and GPT-5.6 Luna. Sol is the flagship model of the series, offering the most advanced reasoning and generation capabilities; Terra strikes a balance between performance and cost; Luna is characterized by its smallest model size and best price-performance ratio. Like many previous updates, Microsoft simultaneously announced that the GPT-5.6 series will be fully integrated into Microsoft 365 Copilot.

Since Microsoft 365 Copilot launched, OpenAI’s models have served as its core foundation. However, over the past year, Microsoft has been progressively incorporating Anthropic’s models across multiple scenarios. Beyond offering Anthropic as an option in Copilot’s model selector, in situations requiring more complex operations within Copilot Cowork and Office applications, Microsoft has even set Anthropic’s Opus series as the default model. This is because over the past several months, Anthropic’s models have demonstrated significantly better performance than OpenAI on knowledge-intensive tasks, proving particularly more reliable in workflows involving long-document reasoning, complex instruction following, and cross-document integration.
However, the situation began to change after the release of GPT-5.5. OpenAI’s progress in knowledge processing capabilities allowed it to catch up with and even surpass Anthropic in certain scenarios. With the official launch of the GPT-5.6 series, Microsoft believes the new model achieves the optimal balance of performance, cost, and overall experience, leading to the decision to make GPT-5.6 the preferred model for Microsoft 365 Copilot. Microsoft stated that they collaborated with OpenAI to optimize the model at the foundational level for Microsoft 365’s knowledge processing needs, enabling GPT-5.6 to deliver higher accuracy and more natural generation quality across applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Chat, and Cowork.
Microsoft Copilot and Agents Core President Nitin Agrawal also issued a statement regarding GPT-5.6’s launch on Microsoft 365 Copilot. He noted that the latest model will enable users to leverage artificial intelligence more effectively in their daily tools—whether writing documents, analyzing data, creating presentations, or collaborating across teams—generating more precise and well-structured content through Copilot. Agrawal emphasized that the goal of Microsoft’s partnership with OpenAI is to enable individuals and organizations worldwide to enjoy a more powerful AI experience within their familiar workflows.
In addition to directly using GPT-5.6 in Copilot, Microsoft will also enable Microsoft 365 enterprise customers to access these models more flexibly through API. Once deployed, Copilot will automatically select GPT-5.6 based on the task; if the model selector is available, users can also manually specify GPT-5.6 to achieve optimal results for specific tasks.
Overall, the addition of the GPT-5.6 series represents a significant upgrade to Microsoft 365 Copilot’s model capabilities. As OpenAI and Microsoft continue to optimize knowledge processing, reasoning capabilities, and cost efficiency, Copilot’s role in enterprise and personal workflows is expected to become even more critical.
