LEGO launches Smart Brick, a 2×4 brick that actually hides an entire microcomputer
For players familiar with LEGO, the charm of LEGO bricks has always come from simplicity and freedom. But The Lego Group clearly believes that plastic building blocks alone are no longer enough to carry the imagination of the next generation. The Smart Brick, which was publicly unveiled at CES 2026, is officially described as the most important evolution of the LEGO system in the past 50 years, and this sentence is not an exaggeration.

The appearance of this Smart Brick is still the size of a classic 2×4 building block, but inside it is a complete microcomputer system. It has a built-in light source, speaker, light sensor, and inertial sensor that can detect movement, tilt, and gestures. It can also form a network connection with other Smart Bricks through Bluetooth to know each other’s position and status. In other words, building blocks are no longer just passive assembly parts, but “know where they are and what they are doing.”

The system works with NFC smart tags, which will be embedded into new LEGO bricks and figures. When Smart Brick detects these tags, it will immediately trigger corresponding sound and light reactions. Take the first wave of the Lego Star Wars series as an example. The lightsaber will buzz, the spaceship engine will roar, and as soon as the character is positioned, the background music will automatically sound, and the whole scene will seem to come alive.
Unlike past interactive toys that required installing batteries and scanning barcodes with a lens, Smart Brick uses a wireless charging design. One charging stand can recharge multiple bricks at the same time. The battery is also designed to maintain performance even if it is not used for a long time. This is a very practical improvement for parents and long-term collectors.

What’s even more interesting is that the Smart Brick has a built-in microphone, but it’s not intended for recording. LEGO officially explains that it is more like a “sound trigger button”. For example, if a child blows on the building blocks, claps his hands or makes a sound, it can activate different reactions. For example, if you put it next to a birthday cake, the sound effects or lighting will change the moment you blow out the candles. The whole gameplay is closer to daily life.
It is worth noting that this system does not introduce AI at all, nor does it have a camera module, so it does not involve image collection or data analysis issues, and it is not compatible with the scanning bricks of the LEGO Mario series. LEGO is clearly deliberately focusing on real-time interaction and safety, rather than chasing the AI craze.

The first three sets of products to be launched on March 1 are all from the Star Wars universe, including the Darth Vader TIE fighter equipped with Smart Brick, the Red No. 5 X-wing fighter, and the Duel of the Throne set including Luke Skywalker, Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader. The size of these sets is slightly smaller than the previous figure-scale Star Wars ships, and the cost is also significantly higher, but the extra budget brings a new level of interactivity.

Officials have not concealed their ambitions, and Smart Brick will never stop at the Star Wars series. LEGO has been low-key testing related technologies in the City series in 2024, and there are rumors in the market that it may extend to popular IPs such as Lego Pokémon in the future. With firmware updates and new tags added, the gameplay will only continue to expand.
