Since Gemini Live first debuted, its visual interface has remained largely unchanged, and the full-screen immersive presentation has gradually become the feature’s signature. However, Google has recently begun testing a brand-new interface adjustment, preparing to remove this familiar full-screen mode on Android and replace it with a design that follows more conventional app interaction logic. The change is still in the testing phase, but it has already made many users feel that Gemini Live is heading toward a significant visual transformation.

In the new design, Gemini Live no longer pops out as a separate full-screen window; instead, it is embedded directly into the Gemini app’s home page. A “Live with Gemini” label appears at the top of the screen, and a new button lets users quickly open a transcript, making it easier to view live transcription content during voice interactions. This adjustment makes Gemini Live feel more like a part of the app rather than a standalone experience that requires switching modes to access.
The prompt box that was originally at the bottom has also been redesigned into a pill-shaped icon, with a blue waveform inside showing voice input status. Camera/screen sharing and microphone mute buttons sit on either side of this icon, giving users more intuitive control over how they interact. To exit Gemini Live, simply tap the keyboard icon or use the system back gesture, making the overall experience feel more consistent with typical Android apps than before.
It’s worth noting that Google previously tested an even more minimalist interface version. That version retained only the camera sharing and keyboard buttons, while hiding the mute function inside a hidden “double-tap waveform” gesture. Although visually cleaner, the controls weren’t intuitive and left many testers confused. By contrast, the new design restores all core functions to visible positions, resulting in an overall experience more in line with what most people expect.
The new interface is now widely visible to users of the Google app beta (version 17.14). It’s important to note that this update is limited to the Gemini app itself and does not extend to the embedded interface within apps—in other words, when users call up Gemini within other Google services, they will still see the old look. Google has said it will also redesign the in-app interface in the future, aiming for a more consistent overall visual style.
Still, the decision to remove the fullscreen interface has sparked no shortage of discussion. Gemini Live’s fullscreen mode has been highly recognizable ever since its launch, arguably serving as the feature’s visual signature. Although it was not strictly necessary from a functional standpoint, it occupied a significant place in branding and marketing materials. Google’s decision to abandon this distinctive visual language is indeed surprising, and has led outsiders to wonder whether Google is rethinking Gemini Live’s positioning.
From a practical-use perspective, the new interface indeed aligns more closely with the interaction logic of common apps and is easier to fit into everyday usage scenarios. For Android users accustomed to multitasking, no longer being forced into full-screen mode may actually improve convenience. However, from a brand identity and product differentiation perspective, this change also means that Gemini Live is gradually shifting from a “special mode” to a “regular feature,” which somewhat dilutes its uniqueness.
Nevertheless, this redesign is still in a testing phase, and Google may refine it further based on user feedback. Whether Gemini Live will fully move away from the full-screen interface or return in some form remains to be seen. What is clear is that Google is actively adjusting the overall Gemini experience to make this AI feature blend more naturally into the Android ecosystem, rather than remaining merely a visually impressive showcase feature.
