The OpenAI developer official account officially released the company’s first branded hardware product today (16th), kbd-1.0-codex-micro (referred to as Codex Micro), co-branded with Canadian Italian keyboard manufacturer Work Louder. It is priced at US$230 (approximately NT$7,500). It is specially designed for heavy Codex users and developers, allowing AI coding and agent workflows to be directly extended to fingertips and physical desktops.

This product is not the anticipated Jony Ive joint project (OpenAI’s chief financial officer has predicted that the cooperation will be unveiled before the end of the year), but a more clearly positioned developer tool, a physical Codex control center. According to OpenAI’s official description, Codex Micro can bring the Agent workspace directly to the user’s hands: “Keep active conversations in front of your eyes, grasp the status of each Agent through real-time RGB lighting, and map the most commonly used Codex operations to physical buttons.”
Hardware specifications: six Agent Keys, joysticks, knobs
The front of the Codex Micro is equipped with six illuminated buttons, each corresponding to a Codex Agent. The six buttons will instantly reflect the Agent status through RGB lighting, including thinking, executing, waiting, and completed. Users can understand it at a glance without switching the chat window. For developers who operate multiple Agents at the same time, this function is very practical in actual combat, and can quickly switch between different Agents directly.
In addition to the Agent Key, Codex Micro is also equipped with a number of physical control components: a joystick is used to quickly start common Codex workflows, including PR Review, Debug, Refactor, etc.; a knob (Dial) is used to adjust the reasoning strength of the Agent in real time, lowering the speed when doing simple tasks, and raising it when encountering complex problems to let the AI Think more carefully; there is also a set of customizable shortcut keys covering core operations such as Accept, Reject, Voice Input (Push-to-Talk), and New Chat.
Work Louder is a Canadian-Italian manufacturer specializing in high-end mechanical keyboards, so Codex Micro also offers two mechanical switch options: “Clicky” and “Silent” to meet the needs of different use environments. The package also comes with 32 Codex Icon Keysets, allowing users to customize key labels.
The first step in OpenAI hardware layout
The launch of Codex Micro comes at an interesting time. OpenAI has recently continued to increase its investment in Codex products. CEO Sam Altman recently revealed that the usage of Codex and ChatGPT Work agent products has surged 2.5 times in a week, and it has also launched Codex TV ads during Super Bowl-level advertising periods. The launch of an exclusive physical control device under such a growth curve is obviously optimistic that the AI coding market will continue to expand.
