Google’s Snapseed photo editor has been around for a long time. While it remains a great editing tool, it has never truly kept pace with the rapidly advancing and ever-evolving photo editing market. The general consensus is that it will be replaced by other projects, such as Google Photos, but Google does not share this view. As early as June 2025, Google surprisingly released the Snapseed 3.0 update for iOS, and it has now confirmed that the latest version will be coming to Android.
Google Brings the Redesigned Snapseed to the Android Platform
In late December 2025, a member of the Snapseed team shared on the Giles-O subreddit that work had begun on an update for the Android version of Snapseed. Giles also mentioned that development began in November, and the update is still a few months away from public release. The Snapseed 3.0 update for iPhone and iPad introduced a complete redesign of the photo editor and added a new icon.

The new interface features a dedicated home page that displays your edited photos in a grid layout. You can also tap the circular floating button to open the system image selector. The editor is then organized into Styles (default filters, but you can add your own), Favorite Filters (up to 4 tools can be displayed), and Tools (grid view, providing access to everything).
In terms of tools, the available options include:
- Adjustment and Calibration
Adjust and enhance details, tone, curves, white balance, color, lens blur, vignetting, and more. - Refinement and Transformation
Local, Brush, Retouch, Portrait, Crop, Perspective, Blur, Head Orientation, etc. - Style
Film, vignetting, nostalgia, retro, black-and-white, HDR images, dramatic effects, black-and-white film, noise, etc. - Creativity
Double exposure, borders, text.
You can also drag left or right to adjust the values, but there’s now a toggle that lets you adjust the photo by holding and dragging it up or down. Interestingly, the iOS version recently added the Snapseed camera with retro film filters, so this feature might also be included in an upcoming Android update.
There’s one thing worth noting about this upcoming update: whether it will draw some attention to the app and whether it will cause some users to leave Google Photos, given that Google Photos features a built-in photo editor and AI editing tools like the much-hyped Magic Eraser.
