Microsoft Launches Copilot Checkout to Help Consumers Shop and Brand Agents to Assist Retailers with Customer Service

With devices like MANUS, which can assist users with various tasks, AI AGENT-type services are all the rage, and recentlyMicrosoft(Microsoft) also officially announced two new features for retail and e-commerce: the ability to Copilot “Purchase directly within the conversation”Copilot Checkout“, as well as an AI agent that helps brands provide a guided shopping experience on their own websites, “Brand Agents“. According to Microsoft’s observations, modern consumers have become accustomed to using AI to assist with shopping decisions. In traditional e-commerce practices, there is often a significant gap between when consumers “develop an interest” and when they “actually make a purchase”; consumers must navigate multiple pages and perform numerous searches to find their favorite or best-value products. Microsoft believes that for retailers, the competitive battleground for conversion rates has shifted “upstream.” This means that whoever can meet consumer needs during the “exploration phase”—before they engage with AI or enter a specific e-commerce platform—will seize the business opportunity. To address users’ expectation that “AI will understand their needs and take action,” Microsoft has launched these two key features in an effort to help retailers stand out in an era of widespread AI adoption.

Copilot Checkout: A Seamless Experience Where Conversation Is Checkout

The most notable feature in this release is “Copilot Checkout.” The core concept behind this feature is to allow users to complete purchases directly within the conversation window with the AI assistant Copilot, without having to navigate to a third-party website or app.

1. Robust integration of the payment ecosystem

To achieve this, Microsoft isn’t going it alone; instead, it has built a vast payments and e-commerce ecosystem. According to official information, “Copilot Checkout” is currently live on Copilot.com in the United States and has integrated global leaders in payment and e-commerce—including PayPal, Shopify, and Stripe—as partners.

2. Data Showing a Significant Increase in Conversion Rates

Microsoft has provided a set of compelling data to demonstrate the effectiveness of this feature. According to the results of internal testing:

  • Improved Timeliness of Purchases: When Copilot Checkout is enabled, purchases made within 30 minutes of an interaction have increased. 53%. This demonstrates that embedding checkout functionality directly into conversations is an effective way to capitalize on consumers’ impulse purchases and immediate needs.

  • Purchase Intent Conversion: When users already have the intent to purchase, they are more likely to complete a transaction using Copilot Checkout than when they do not use this feature. 194%。

3. Retail giants are leading the way in adopting this technology

Currently, this feature has been adopted by several well-known retail brands. The first wave of participants includes apparel brands Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie, furniture giant Ashley Furniture, and the handmade e-commerce platform Etsy. Microsoft also revealed that more retailers are expected to roll out the system by January 2026.

Brand Agents: AI Sales Reps That Infuse Brands with Soul

In addition to optimizing the transaction process, Microsoft is also working to address the lack of “human touch” and “professionalism” in online shopping, which is why it launched “Brand Agents.”

1. The Digital Star Salesperson

Microsoft defines Brand Agents as “AI-powered shopping assistants.” Their equivalent in physical stores are knowledgeable, professional sales associates who understand the brand’s ethos and listen to customers. Unlike traditional customer service bots that can only answer scripted questions, Brand Agents use natural conversation to spark customers’ desire to buy and guide them toward a purchase decision.

2. Boost Confidence in Decision-Making

Microsoft emphasizes that the value of Brand Agents lies in empowering consumers. Through expert guidance, shoppers can access more comprehensive information, enabling them to make decisions more quickly and click the “Buy” button with confidence.

3. Case Study: Alexander Del Rossa

To demonstrate the effectiveness of Brand Agents, Microsoft cited an early adoption case study involving pajama manufacturer Alexander Del Rossa. Data shows that in shopping conversations facilitated by Brand Agents, the conversion rate was more than three times higher than in conversations without such assistance (i.e., without AI intervention). This data strongly supports the argument that “high-quality AI interactions can directly drive sales.”

Summary

Microsoft’s “Copilot Checkout” and “Brand Agents” may have been inspired by ChatGPT’s recently launched shopping features, with the aim of incorporating similar shopping guidance and traffic-driving capabilities into its own Copilot. With Copilot Checkout, Microsoft embeds the checkout process directly into the conversation, shortening the path from interest to purchase; meanwhile, Brand Agents bring brand knowledge, tone, and a sense of service back to the front end of websites, addressing both B2B and B2C needs at once—all in an effort to increase the likelihood of consumer conversions. However, I’d like to ask you this: Would you want to hand over the final decision-making power for selecting and purchasing items to AI? Or would you prefer that AI help you compare prices and find the products that best suit your needs? Personally, I lean toward the latter.
