What a stroke of luck! An overseas user went to replace the battery in his old MacBook Pro, but Apple ended up giving him a brand-new M4 MacBook Pro (priced at over $4,000) for free.
An Otto-Mate user shared a positive experience on the MacBook Pro subreddit on Reddit. In his post, he wrote that his 2018 15-inch MacBook Pro recently displayed a “Battery Needs Service” alert. Since he’d been using it for quite some time, he decided to take it in for repair.
At first, he went to a third-party repair shop, which quoted him 200 pounds. After checking with the Apple Store, he found that it was only 45 pounds more expensive, so he decided to have Apple handle it.
After a while, he received a phone call. At first, he thought the repair had been completed, but to his surprise, the person on the other end told him that the MacBook Pro had stopped working during the repair process, and even after trying two sets of new parts, they still couldn’t get it to work properly.
As a result, Apple decided to provide him with a new model with specifications as close as possible to those of his original device and asked him which color he would like.
otto-mate also mentioned that he initially thought he’d have to pay the £245 battery replacement fee, but to his surprise, Apple didn’t charge him a single penny! He even offered to pay an additional £150 to upgrade to a new device, but Apple declined. That’s really unbelievable!
In the end, he walked out of the Apple Store with a brand-new 16-inch M4 MacBook Pro, which retails for 3,249 British pounds—approximately 137,000 New Taiwan dollars. He didn’t specify the CPU model, but given the price, it’s likely the M4 Max, featuring a 16-core CPU, a 40-core GPU, 48GB of unified memory, and a 2TB SSD.

However, since Apple was willing to replace it with a high-end MacBook Pro equipped with the M4 Max, it’s safe to assume that the specs of the old MacBook Pro he brought in weren’t all that bad to begin with—though otto-mate didn’t go into detail on this point.
Actually, it wasn’t just him—a Techmixr user also commented below, saying that he had just upgraded his 2020 i9 model to an M4 Max, equipped with 64GB of RAM and 4TB of storage. He emphasized, “When Apple’s repair service is done right, it really leaves you thoroughly impressed.” Many other users also commented below, noting that Apple’s repair service is truly excellent:

Of course, this is a special case; normally, if a device can’t be repaired, Apple will replace it with a new one for free—it just depends on how lucky you are at the time.
