Apple IntelligenceAlthough it has been out for a while, I believe the number of people who actually use it must be quite small. Currently, Apple’s own… AI The model’s capabilities with ChatGPT、GeminiCompared to Claude, it’s still far behind—whether it’s text summarization, rewriting, image generation, or Siri’s conversational quality, none of it makes you want to use it daily. And it seems iOS 27 has a solution for this. According to the latest reports from foreign media, iOS 27 is said to introduce a new “Extensions” mechanism that will allow iPhone users to switch to using third-party AI models like Google Gemini or Anthropic Claude to power Siri, Writing Tools, Image Playground, and other Apple Intelligence features.

iOS 27 Reportedly Set to Open Apple Intelligence to Gemini and Claude

According to Bloomberg’s reportThey obtained the iOS 27 beta internal documentation, in which Apple described a brand new Extensions mechanism as follows

Extensions allow you to access generative AI capabilities from installed apps on demand, through Apple Intelligence features such as Siri, Writing Tools, Image Playground and more.

Simply put, the AI apps you install on your phone (like Gemini, Claude) can power Apple Intelligence features, including chatting with Siri, Writing Tools editing your text, and Image Playground generating images—you don’t have to use Apple’s own models; it can be a third-party AI you specify.

As for how it will actually work, Google and Anthropic can add Extensions support to their existing Gemini and Claude apps. After they’re released on the App Store, users can download them and, in iOS 27 settings, designate these third-party models as the processing engine for various Apple Intelligence features.

Foreign media outlet MacRumor speculates that the settings option might be located in Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri, presented as a menu similar to Default Browser. In theory, you could also assign different models for different tasks, such as using Claude for writing tools, Gemini for Image Playground, and ChatGPT for general queries—whichever model is strongest for the job.

There’s also a particularly interesting point mentioned in the 9to5Mac report: Apple Intelligence and third-party AI models can have different Siri voices assigned to them. So when you ask Siri a question, if it’s going to be handled by a third-party AI model, the voice of the response will also switch accordingly, letting you immediately tell whether the answer came from Apple AI or a third-party AI.

Not just iOS 27 — iPadOS 27 and macOS 27 are also expected to introduce Extensions.
