Google is officially rebranding its AI note-taking and research tools. The product formerly known as “NotebookLM” will be shown under the new name of Gemini Notebook in the future. This is one of the largest updates since its launch, and also symbolizes Google’s full integration of its AI products under the Gemini brand.

Google said: “Today we are renaming NotebookLM Gemini Notebook. It is still a standalone product focused on being the first choice for users’ research tools, but it will play a more important role in the entire Google ecosystem in the future, including providing deeper integration in Gemini applications and Google search.”
The development history of Gemini Notebook itself is a technological narrative. It was initially launched in 2023 under the code name “Project Tailwind” and made its debut at the Google I/O conference that year. Google positioned it as a research assistant that can help organize data and understand content. In July 2023, NotebookLM began accepting waitlist applications, was first launched in the United States a few months later, and gradually added new features, eventually expanding to the global market.
The core capability of Gemini Notebook is to help users process large amounts of information. It can organize notes, generate summaries, and even generate audio and video summaries based on the data provided by users. Google said that more than 30 million users and 600,000 organizations have used this tool. Students can convert class notes into audio or video summaries, and companies can use it to create onboarding materials for new employees, making knowledge transfer more efficient.
In addition to the name change, Google also announced that it will open native code writing and execution capabilities to all Pro users in the coming weeks. This capability was previously only available to AI Ultra subscribers and was launched in June this year along with other updates. Code support means that Gemini Notebook is no longer just a tool for organizing data, but can also become an auxiliary platform for researchers and developers.
Google once described NotebookLM as “a secure cloud computer in every laptop.” The company pointed out that the system has more than 100 selected software skills built into it, which can help users conduct deeper research and more complex analysis. These skills cover various capabilities such as data collection, content understanding, and reasoning assistance, making Gemini Notebook a research workspace with AI reasoning capabilities.
Next, Google will further integrate Gemini Notebook with the AI model of Google search. This research assistant function was launched on the Gemini app earlier this year. Users can synchronize their notebooks between Gemini Notebook and Gemini App, allowing the research process to continue across platforms. In the future, when users search for information, they will be able to import data into notebooks more directly and use AI to organize and analyze it. Overall, the renaming of Gemini Notebook is not just a brand adjustment, but a key step for Google to fully integrate research tools into the Gemini ecosystem.
