Discord is preparing to roll out one of the largest policy changes in the service’s history. To enhance youth safety and content rating, the platform has announced that it will fully implement an age verification system starting in March. All users worldwide must complete verification; otherwise, their accounts will automatically be classified as “Youth Mode” and subject to stricter content and feature restrictions.

This change did not come about suddenly. In recent years, legislatures around the world have placed increasing emphasis on age verification and the protection of minors on social media platforms. From the United States to the European Union, stricter regulations are being pushed forward, and Discord—as a messaging platform used by a large number of teenagers—has naturally become a focus of regulatory scrutiny. This update is the platform’s response to external pressure and its own security strategy.
According to the Discord announcementAll accounts will be switched to teen settings by default. This means that until users complete verification, they will be subject to three major restrictions: stricter communication and private messaging settings, inability to access servers or channels marked as adult-only, and enhanced content filtering mechanisms. Only after successfully verifying their age will accounts regain full adult user privileges.
To verify that users are adults, Discord will offer two main verification methods: facial age estimation and submission of identification documents; in some cases, both methods may be required. The platform states that facial scans will be conducted via a “video selfie,” but all image data will be processed on the device and will not be uploaded to the server. If users choose to submit identification documents, the data will be processed by a third-party provider and promptly deleted once verification is complete.
In addition to active verification, Discord will also roll out a new “age inference model.” This is a system that runs in the background to estimate a user’s age based on account behavior and other signals, and will request additional verification when necessary. In other words, even if a user does not actively submit information, the system may still determine that the account requires further verification and ask the user to take additional steps. Discord stated that this global age verification program will officially launch in early March and will be gradually expanded to all regions and users.
It is worth noting that Discord faced criticism last fall following a data breach involving a third-party age verification provider. Although the breach did not originate from Discord’s servers, the incident still raised concerns among users about the security of their identity verification data. Consequently, Discord has specifically highlighted four privacy protection measures to alleviate these concerns:
- Device-Side Processing: The video selfies required for facial age estimation never leave the user’s device.
- Quick Deletion: Identity document information submitted to partners is deleted immediately after verification and is generally not retained for the long term.
- One-time verification: Most users only need to complete the process once, and the platform will automatically adjust account permissions based on the verification results. Multi-factor verification is only required when the system needs additional information.
- Privacy Protection: Users’ age verification status is not made public and cannot be viewed by other users.
These measures demonstrate Discord’s attempt to strike a balance between “compliance with regulations” and “protecting user privacy”; however, mandatory age verification may still spark controversy. Some users may be concerned about the risk of identity data leaks, while others question the accuracy and fairness of facial age estimation. On the other hand, parents and regulatory authorities may view this policy as an important step toward more responsible platform governance. In any case, this update will profoundly impact the Discord user experience. For teenagers, the platform will become safer and more restricted; for adults, they will need to undergo a one-time identity verification to maintain their current level of freedom. For Discord, this is a difficult but necessary adjustment, symbolizing the next phase of the social platform’s evolution within the global regulatory landscape.
