Sam Altman officially announced that ChatGPT paid accounts can now use OpenClaw directly, and subscription plans are valid across all platforms!

With the rise of AI agent applications like OpenClaw and Hermes, major model service providers have been facing computing power shortages due to excessive token consumption (which has pleased Huang). Some AI companies, such as Anthropic, have implemented blocking strategies to prevent usage, while others have begun raising the rates for their existing Coding Plan. However, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman took the opposite approach and dropped a bombshell on X (formerly Twitter) on the morning of May 2, Taiwan time. He posted: “ChatGPT users can now log in to OpenClaw directly with their existing accounts, and their existing ChatGPT subscription plans will also be valid on the OpenClaw platform. Happy shrimp farming.” This brief yet highly significant tweet quickly sparked heated discussion within the global AI community, accumulating over 860,000 views, 14,000 likes, and nearly 1,000 retweets in less than 10 hours.

Altman posted on his personal X account, @sama, writing:

you can sign in to openclaw with your chatgpt account now and use your subscription there!

happy Openclaw.

What is OpenClaw? Why is OpenAI so enthusiastic about it?

OpenClaw It is a program developed by an Austrian software developer Peter Steinberger An open-source AI agent framework. With its highly automated capabilities—including the ability to independently complete tasks, make decisions, and interact with applications and web services on behalf of users—it quickly went viral on social media. In the Chinese market, OpenClaw is widely used in conjunction with domestic language models such as DeepSeek, and even Baidu plans to directly integrate OpenClaw functionality into its own mobile apps.

In February of this year, Sam Altman personally announced that Peter Steinberger had joined OpenAI to lead the development of “next-generation AI agents.” Altman described Steinberger as a “genius” and predicted that OpenClaw “will soon become central to our products.”

A Comparison of Approaches: Anthropic’s Ban vs. OpenAI’s Generous Integration

The power struggle surrounding OpenClaw best illustrates the starkly different dynamics among the AI giants. Earlier this year, Anthropic sent OpenClaw a cease-and-desist letter, arguing that the name “Claw” was too similar to its own “Claude,” and demanding that OpenClaw either change its name or stop using it. Later, Anthropic even blocked users from connecting to OpenClaw via OAuth. These actions sparked significant backlash within the community, with many viewing Anthropic’s move as petty: rather than choosing to collaborate with or embrace an emerging open-source project, the company opted to resort directly to legal action.

However, OpenAI’s response was exactly the opposite. Not only did Sam Altman quickly recruit OpenClaw’s founders to join his team, but within just three months, he also broke down the account barriers between ChatGPT and OpenClaw, allowing millions of ChatGPT subscribers to access OpenClaw’s powerful features directly through their existing subscription plans. From issuing a ban to allowing users to switch platforms for free, Anthropic and OpenAI’s attitudes toward OpenClaw stood in stark contrast.

Cross-Platform ChatGPT Subscriptions: What Does This Mean for Users?

The most practical impact of this integration is that ChatGPT’s paid subscription plan can now be applied directly to the OpenClaw platform at no additional cost. For OpenClaw users, this means they can use their existing OpenAI subscription to power the AI agent features, significantly lowering the barrier to entry. (In fact, OpenAI has never explicitly prohibited this, but it also never stated that the subscription could be used to “raise Openclaw”—this announcement effectively confirms that it is now permitted.)

Real-world application scenarios include:

  • Log in to OpenClaw with your ChatGPT subscription account to let the AI agent automatically manage your emails and fill out online forms
  • Integrating OpenClaw with GPT models to enable autonomous decision-making and task scheduling
  • Developers can directly call on ChatGPT’s model capabilities within the OpenClaw framework

Conclusion

From Anthropic’s ban to OpenAI poaching the founder, and now ChatGPT subscriptions linking directly to OpenClaw—in less than three months, this open-source community’s breakout project has become a microcosm of the strategic rivalry between the two AI giants. One side has chosen closure and restriction, while the other has opted for openness and integration.

The best news for users is this: if you’re already a paid subscriber to ChatGPT Plus or a higher tier, you can now use this powerful AI agent platform for free—within your quota—via OAuth.
