January 2026 is almost a disaster for Microsoft and the Windows ecosystem. For a month now, Microsoft has been admitting new update bugs almost every week, and the issues range from serious to ridiculous. The worst case scenario is that some devices cannot start directly after the update.“UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_ERROR” error occurred; Minor but equally puzzling problems include the computer not shutting down properly or entering hibernation mode.

Microsoft confirms more Windows PCs won’t shut down or hibernate after recent update

Microsoft originally attempted to patch these bugs urgently through out-of-band updates, but subsequent investigations revealed that the number of affected devices was far more than the company initially expected, turning the entire incident from a simple update flaw into a comprehensive crisis of trust. In order to clarify the situation, Microsoft recently updated the official Windows Health Dashboard document and added that shutdown and hibernation issues are not only related to Secure Boot (Secure Boot), but also affect systems with “Virtualization-based Security (VBS)” enabled. VBS is a security mechanism that uses virtualization technology to isolate sensitive information, which can improve the system’s ability to resist malicious attacks. However, if the device has VBS enabled and has recently installed Windows updates, it may not shut down or hibernate properly.

Fortunately, these problems do not affect all ordinary users. The affected systems are mainly Windows 11 version 23H2, Windows 10 22H2, Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021, and Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019. Microsoft has launched a patch update for devices with Secure Boot enabled (note that Secure Boot and VBS are two different security mechanisms, the former is responsible for verifying the boot loader, and the latter protects sensitive data within the system). However, VBS-enabled PCs are currently still awaiting an official fix.

This series of problems has made Windows 11’s image even worse. Over the past year, Microsoft has been criticized by users due to inconsistent update quality, frequent feature changes, and some AI features being criticized as “tasteless”. Now, coupled with the update incident that broke out at the beginning of 2026, many users are increasingly dissatisfied with the stability of Windows.

In the face of external pressure, Pavan Davuluri, head of the Windows department, recently publicly stated that Microsoft will prioritize core issues such as system performance, stability and reliability in 2026, and promised to improve the quality of updates. He emphasized that the team has re-examined internal processes in the hope of avoiding another “disaster month” like January.

For many Windows users, this statement is certainly worthy of recognition, but what can truly rebuild trust is whether future updates can be stable, reliable, and no longer cause large-scale disasters. As the most popular desktop operating system in the world, Windows’ update quality affects the daily operations of countless enterprises and individual users. 2026 has just begun, and Microsoft clearly still has a lot of homework to do.
