Intel 18A yield rate improves by 7-8% every month: Panther Lake mass production goes smoothly, foundry business rebounds from bottom?

Intel’s stock price plummeted 17% in one day due to unsatisfactory financial reports. However, CEO Chen Liwu recently released exciting news at multiple investor meetings: the yield rate of its key Intel 18A process node is steadily increasing at a rate of 7% to 8% per month. This progress makes Panther Lake processors expected to be successfully mass-produced in the first half of 2026. This is not only an important milestone for Intel’s process technology, but also regarded as a key indicator of whether its foundry business can reverse its decline.

Intel 18A yield goes from “pretty bad” to “industry level”

Intel Executive Director Chen Liwu during a meeting in early February 2026confess, when he took over, the yield rate of the 18A process was “pretty bad.” To turn things around, he enlisted the help of industry experts, including working with yield improvement specialists such as PDF Solutions and KLA to introduce best practices. Chen Liwu said he set a goal of 7% to 8% improvement per month and is now seeing that pace of progress. This improvement is consistent with industry standards: According to the semiconductor industry’s rule of thumb, a yield ramp of around 7% per month is considered a healthy process maturation trajectory.

Intel Vice President John Pitzer further added at the RBC Capital Markets Technology Forum that the 18A yield curve has been rising steadily over the past seven to eight months. If this rate of improvement continues, Intel is expected to advance Panther Lake to full production without significantly increasing unit costs.

Panther Lake: The renaissance clarion call for Intel’s in-house chips

Panther Lake is Intel’s first consumer processor built on the 18A process and is expected to be launched in the first half of 2026. This processor is of great significance: it will allow Intel to transfer its latest CPU product line from TSMC foundry back to its own fab production, which will not only increase profit margins, but also prove the technical strength of Intel Foundry.

Chen Liwu expressed confidence in Panther Lake’s production prospects, saying he can “really rely” on the company’s fabs to produce the product. He also revealed that after seeing the progress of the 18A process, “several customers” have expressed interest, but due to confidentiality agreements, he cannot disclose the specific names.

Intel’s current strategy is to adjust pricing on existing product lines to manage tight supply: increasing prices for 10nm and 7nm Raptor Lake chips, while discounting Arrow Lake and Lunar Lake to cover low-end demand in the PC market. According to reports, Intel’s Arrow Lake-S “Core Ultra 200S” desktop processors are discounted by nearly 50% in the Chinese market.

Intel 14A: More radical technology advancement

Looking further into the future, Chen Liwu said that Intel is “concentrated” on the development of the Intel 14A process node. This is the most advanced process technology on Intel’s roadmap and is planned to enter risk production in 2027 and mass production in 2029.

Compared with 18A, Intel’s customer contact strategy has changed significantly in 14A. Pitzer noted that 14A has entereddefinition phase, companies are engaging with potential customers at an earlier point in time than 18A. This early communication helps produce a more mature process design kit (PDK) and makes the development path more consistent with customer needs. 14A will use the second generation Gate-All-Around (RibbonFET) transistor and be equipped with an improved version of the back power supply network (PowerVia) to further improve performance and power consumption efficiency.

However, acquiring 14A customers will be costly. Pitzer acknowledged that Intel Foundry’s original goal of reaching breakeven by the end of 2027 may be delayed as 14A gains more customer traction. But he believes most investors will accept such a delay because it means Intel can finally build a true external foundry business.

Memory becomes AI’s biggest bottleneck

When talking about the challenges of AI infrastructure, Chen Liwu pointed out that memory is currently the biggest limiting factor. He said that based on discussions with major players in the industry, the tight memory supply situation “will not ease until 2028.” AI workloads have staggering demands on memory, and this bottleneck is restricting the development speed of the entire industry.

In addition to memory, Chen highlighted several key challenges:

  • Heat dissipation and power consumption: High-performance processors may be forced to downclock due to heat dissipation issues, and liquid cooling, microfluidic cooling and immersion cooling are becoming more and more important.
  • interconnect technology: Interconnects are moving from copper to optical to meet speed and latency demands
  • software stack: Advances require a full-stack approach beyond silicon to include cluster management software

China’s competitive pressure: an opponent that cannot be ignored

Chen Liwu issued a warning at the meeting: The United States may have fallen behind China in some aspects. He described DeepSeek as a “wake-up call” and said he originally thought China would fall behind due to a lack of advanced GPUs and tools, but when recruiting CPU architects, he was surprised to find the concentration of talent in China. He revealed that Huawei has “100 CPU architects” and their quality is “top-notch.” They can bypass tool limitations and are “quietly building” capabilities they lack. Chen Liwu warned that China was “not far behind” and that if the United States was not careful, it might be “overtaken in a corner.”

Conclusion: The dawn of foundry renaissance

Intel’s 18A process yield improvement progress has undoubtedly brought a glimmer of hope to the semiconductor giant’s foundry business. The monthly yield climbing rate of 7-8% proves that Chen Liwu’s technical team reforms are working. However, the challenges remain serious. Intel must successfully mass-produce Panther Lake in 2026, while winning the trust of external customers and fulfilling the technical commitment of 14A. Only in this way can the foundry business allow customers to place orders with confidence, and its heavy asset investment can be expected to be recovered as soon as possible.
