Twitch streamer and creator Perri Karyal recently shared on social media that he has made a new device that stimulates the vestibular system through electric current, giving the body the feeling of “leaning in a certain direction.”

The core concept is “electrical vestibular stimulation (GVS)”. These electrodes are connected to a small device that can deliver direct current. The current intensity is very weak, probably only a few milliamperes, to avoid being too dangerous. Then the electrodes are placed near the back of the ear and the device is connected to the Xbox joystick. When the joystick is pushed to the left or right, the current flows in one direction, making the brain mistakenly think that the body is leaning or needs to correct its balance, and the body will lean to the left or right.

Perri also emphasized during the live broadcast that the electrodes must be attached to the right place, otherwise they will be ineffective or too painful. He also reminded that changing the direction of the current can also make people feel dizzy or want to fall. Everything is based on the application of medical knowledge.

In the video, she first tested running in a straight line, and her friend controlled the joystick. When she specified the direction, the route would be “taken away”.

Then came the racing game “Trackmania”. When the car turned at high speed, she felt that her body was really pushed to the side, like riding a roller coaster. For example, when the car turns left, the current causes it to tilt to the right, simulating centrifugal force; when it turns right, the opposite happens. She said this makes the game feel super immersive, as if you are actually on the track.

But the effect is not perfect. When tested, she had side effects of headaches, flashing eyes, blurred vision, and a buzzing feeling. Because she was uncomfortable, she tried a few more times and adjusted the current intensity, and the effect became better. However, she still advises others not to try it. The risk of this type of stimulation is uncertain whether it will have long-term effects.

Perri said he wanted to make games more immersive, especially racing games. She feels that traditional games only have pictures and sounds, which are not realistic enough. If the body can feel the “G force” when turning (the feeling of being pushed aside), it will be more exciting to play.

GVS is actually not a new technology, and there have been similar cases in the past.

In 2005, Japan’s NTT demonstrated that after a reporter put on the device and researchers adjusted the direction of the current, the reporter would have a sense of “having to move” and move to a certain side as if being controlled by a remote control. He described the process as unsettling and tiring.

In 2021, a Reddit user also shared a similar experimental video. He wore this device in a driving game, and when the vehicle turned, his body would naturally tilt in the same direction. He even fell out of his chair when the car overturned.
