Just earlier this year, film studio Lionsgate Entertainment stated that it was planning to adapt more of its movie IPs into AAA game masterpieces, including movies of different types such as “Defender” and “Saw”. At Sony’s PlayStation launch event State of Play earlier this week, players finally saw the release of a “Defender” 3A video game.

This game is produced by Saber Interactive, which has developed works such as “Jurassic Park: Survival”, “World Z War” and “Warhammer 40,000: Starfighter 2”. It is currently expected to be launched on PS5, PC and Xbox Series platforms. The exact launch time has not yet been determined.

At this State of Play press conference, players saw the release of many surprise works, including the remastered version of the original trilogy of “God of War”, the new expansion game “God of War: Sons of Sparta”, and “Metal Gear Solid Master Collection 2” which includes the classic work “Metal Gear Solid 4”. It was also confirmed that “Death Stranding 2” will be officially launched on the PC platform in March. As for this “Defense Mission” video game version, it became one of the biggest surprises at this press conference.
Although the officially released 2-minute CG trailer does not contain actual gameplay footage, players can still see various scenes and action scenes that are consistent with the style of the “Defender” movie. At the end, the screen reveals John Wick’s face and speaks his classic lines in the movie.
It is worth noting that the title of the trailer after it was uploaded to the YouTube platform is “Untitled “Defense Mission” game”, which implies that the exact title of the work has not been disclosed yet, and Saber Interactive’s official blog also revealed some details that players can look forward to.
According to the development team, this video game adaptation of “Defender” is a AAA masterpiece jointly created by Saber Interactive, Lion Entertainment, and “Defender” series director Chad Stahelski. It will also include an original story line set in the world view of the “Defender” series, rather than adapting any story in the “Defender” movie tetralogy. As for the actor Keanu Reeves himself, he also personally participated in the dubbing and facial capture performance of this game.

Additionally, the announcement mentions that players will have the opportunity to meet many other familiar faces from the Defenders film series in the game, plus many new characters created specifically for the video game version of the story. Because of this, the development team emphasized that all designs in the game will be loyal to the spirit of the original “Defender” series, including the “gun-shaped” combat style that blends firearms and close combat, as well as the jaw-dropping camera movement and immersive experience.
Saber Interactive has been active in the gaming industry since the early 2000s, and has become famous in recent years for a number of licensed titles. For example, “Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2”, launched in 2024, is one of the team’s most popular games recently, and Saber has also confirmed that it will develop a sequel to this work. In addition to “Defense Mission”, other works currently being planned include the video game version of “Ghost Raising and Cannibalism”, “Jurassic World: Survival” and “Turok: Origins”, as well as the highly anticipated “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic” remake, etc.

The “Defense Mission” released this time will become the first “AAA masterpiece” of this IP. Before this, players have seen “Defense Mission” adapted into some smaller-scale game works, such as the 2017 VR game “Defense Mission: Chronicle” and the 2019 board strategy game “Defense Mission HEX”. Taking into account past John Wick Chronicles entries, the in-development Defender will be a fast-paced shooter that’s closer to the original film. As for the exact release time and more details, further official announcements are yet to be made.
