5 tips to extend the life of your OLED TV
So, how long can an OLED TV last? Most brands give a lifespan estimate of around 100,000 hours, which equates to roughly 8 to 10 years of use. The actual lifespan may be longer, but when you start looking at common OLED problems, such as local color casts, brightness degradation, or burn-in, it’s inevitable to worry about when these conditions will occur. These concerns are not entirely unfounded, but many are actually based on data from earlier models. Today’s OLED TVs are much more reliable than they were five years ago.RTINGS A three-year extreme endurance test was recently conducted with more than a hundred TVs operating continuously in the laboratory. The results show that OLED’s overall reliability ranks among the best among all types of TVs. Although all OLEDs tested ended up with varying degrees of burn-in, that’s because the testing conditions are far more stringent than general household use. Under normal circumstances, your OLED TV is unlikely to encounter major problems, but the following five tips can help you extend its life and maintain the best picture quality.

Don’t turn the brightness to the highest level
Whether you are using a high-brightness flagship OLED TV or a lower-brightness entry-level model, the brand actually does not recommend that you turn the brightness to the highest level every day. There is a reason behind it. The “O” in OLED stands for Organic, which means that unlike traditional LEDs or Mini-LEDs, OLED panels are composed of organic compounds. These materials can bring deep blacks and extremely high contrast, but like all organic substances, they will gradually age over time, and high-brightness use will accelerate this process.
Research from the U.S. Department of Energy points out that an OLED panel that can be used for about 40,000 hours at 25% brightness may have a lifespan shortened to only about 10,000 hours if it is operated at full brightness for a long time. This is actually consistent with our understanding of organic materials. Flowers wilt faster under strong light, fresh ingredients are more likely to spoil at high temperatures, and the compounds in OLED panels will have similar reactions. This doesn’t mean OLED TVs are fragile, but they do accelerate aging if used at 100% brightness for long periods of time.
Therefore, before increasing the brightness above 50%, try closing the curtains or lowering the ambient light. This will usually improve viewing and is better for the long-term health of the panel. If your environment is inherently bright, such as a sunny patio or an open-plan living room, you may want to reconsider OLED.

Do not leave static images displayed for long periods of time
Brightness is not the only factor that accelerates the aging of OLED panels. Displaying static images for a long time is also critical. OLED panels are composed of millions of self-luminous pixels. When some of the pixels maintain the same brightness and display the same picture for a long time, they will age faster than other pixels, and eventually “burn-in” may occur. Even after switching channels or turning off the TV, a faint shadow remains on the screen.
The RTINGS durability tests provide a good example of how this phenomenon occurs under extreme conditions. They had CNN broadcast at maximum brightness for about 20 hours straight for nearly three years, accumulating more than 10,000 hours of highly repetitive content. Not surprisingly, after about 18 months, all OLED test units developed permanent image retention. But that doesn’t mean watching the news for a few hours a day will do the same damage. The problem only occurs when “you watch the same channel every day and rarely switch content.” For most people, as long as they watch movies, albums, sports events, games and other diverse content, reviewers believe that they are unlikely to encounter branding after more than ten years of normal use.
The real risk comes from “long-term, high-brightness, repeated playback of the same picture.” This is actually equivalent to reproducing a laboratory stress test at home. Therefore, OLED TVs are not suitable for use in waiting rooms, offices, or any place where the same content needs to be played for a long time every day.

Please make sure these settings are enabled
OLED TVs purchased in 2026 have come a long way in resisting burn-in compared to earlier models from 2018. As the technology matures, manufacturers have not only improved the design of the panel itself, but also integrated more smart protection mechanisms into the TV system to make burn-in problems less likely to occur. One of the most important features is “Pixel Offset”. The TV will periodically move the picture slightly by a few pixels to prevent pixels in the same position from being subjected to a fixed brightness for a long time, thus reducing uneven aging. Take firmware updates and routine maintenance seriously
Most TV brands will continue to launch software updates after their products are launched to improve the viewing experience or improve system stability. Some updates fine-tune protections, while others patch vulnerabilities. They usually update automatically as long as the TV remains connected to the Internet, but it’s still wise to check manually once in a while to ensure functionality is working properly.
While updating the firmware, don’t neglect hardware maintenance. If dust accumulates around vents or ports, it will hinder heat dissipation and cause the panel to operate at higher temperatures, thereby accelerating aging. Turn off the TV

If you often leave the TV playing in the background, do housework in another room, or just swipe your phone while leaving the TV on, the accumulated use time will accelerate the aging of the panel. You can think of this “100,000 hours” as prepaid airtime. Use it when you need it, and turn it off when you’re done, to avoid meaningless consumption.
Letting the TV enter the standby state in a timely manner also allows it to smoothly perform pixel refresh and compensation cycles to maintain panel health. Of course, not everyone will remember to shut down manually, and that’s normal. Most TVs have built-in automatic sleep timers that automatically turn off after a period of inactivity. If you are used to falling asleep with the TV on, or often forget to turn it off when you go out, it is recommended to enable this function.
Another helpful way is to use a screen saver. Most OLED TVs automatically turn on after a few minutes of inactivity to avoid static images staying in the same position for long periods of time. While it’s not as effective as a complete shutdown (since the panel is still functioning), it does reduce the risk of burn-in. Still, some experts caution: Screen savers still consume pixels, and the best thing to do is always just turn off the TV if you can.
