Hackers successfully ported Linux to PS5! Can play almost all PC games “GTA V” and can run light chase at 60FPS

Recently, a foreign security engineer Andy Nguyen (screen name: theflow0) announced on the X platform that it has successfully ported the Linux system to PlayStation 5, transforming Sony’s game console into a “Steam Machine” that can run PC games. This ground-breaking modification sparked heated discussions online, allowing the player community to see the hidden potential of PS5 hardware.

Transformation result: PS5 Slim turns into a Linux game console

Andy Nguyen chose PS5 Slim for modification, broke through PS5’s multi-layered software and hardware defenses through a complete exploit chain, and successfully transplanted the Linux system to the console. From the demonstration video he released, we can see that this modified host, nicknamed “LinuxStation 5” by netizens, runs a full version of the Linux system without any reduction in functionality. The modified PS5 is capable of all operations of an ordinary PC. The most surprising thing is that it can also run “GTA V Enhanced Edition” through the Steam platform. Tests show that when the game is set to 1440p resolution and the “High RT” ray tracing preset is turned on, the frame rate is stable at 60 FPS with almost no fluctuations, and the audio is completely normal.

Andy Nguyen revealed that this modified host supports 4K HDMI and audio output, and all USB interfaces can operate normally. In terms of hardware, the CPU is preset at 3.2GHz and the GPU is at 2.0GHz. It can be further overclocked: the CPU is up to 3.5GHz and the GPU is up to 2.23GHz. However, the heat dissipation system of PS5 Slim cannot maintain high frequency operation for a long time, and it is easy to overheat after overclocking, so it was ultimately chosen to reduce the frequency to ensure stability.

Technical Breakthrough: Using Byepervisor Vulnerability to Breakthrough Limitations

This transformation was not easy. Andy Nguyen specifically chose an old PS5 with a firmware version between 1.0 and 2.0. He exploited the “Byepervisor” vulnerability to successfully bypass the virtual machine hypervisor on the Sony host, gain kernel-level control, and then execute unsigned code.

At present, the GPU acceleration function of this console is still under development, and some functions are still limited, but such results have already made the player community shine. In fact, the underlying essence of PS5 is a closed x86 architecture device, very similar to a PC. Without the limitations of Sony’s hypervisor, it can actually boot Linux systems directly.

It is worth noting that due to the use of a complete exploit chain, this modification can only run on older versions of firmware. In other words, the latest system version of PS5 cannot currently run Linux. This restriction significantly reduces the pool of potential users.

This transformation also indirectly indicates the potential of the upcoming Steam console, which has similar performance to the PS5 and will run the Linux-based SteamOS system. With the help of Proton compatibility tools developed by Valve, almost all Windows games can be executed seamlessly, sometimes with small frame rate improvements. And this Linux-PS5 takes care of both. After debugging, it can be turned back into a normal console and play PS5 exclusive games normally. Risks and Limitations

While the results are stunning, this transformation comes with significant risks and limitations. First, the mod requires older firmware (versions 1.0-2.0), which means most recently purchased or connected PS5s won’t be able to do this mod. Secondly, modifying the host will void Sony’s official warranty and may cause system instability or hardware damage. In addition, the heat dissipation design of PS5 Slim was originally optimized for PlayStation OS and cannot effectively handle the heat after overclocking.

For Sony, this type of modification is both a technical verification of its hardware choices and an ongoing security challenge. While impressive, such vulnerabilities typically prompt Sony to release firmware updates to patch security vulnerabilities and maintain the company’s control over the platform’s software ecosystem.

Conclusion

The current transformation results of Andy Nguyen provide players with a new direction, but due to the old firmware and some functional defects, it will be difficult to popularize it in the short term. However, this breakthrough once again proves the hardware potential of PS5, and also makes the outside world think more about Sony’s closed strategy of consoles and the development of future game hardware. As development continues to progress, we can expect further optimizations and improvements, and perhaps future console games will be more open and customizable than ever before.
