Driven by the AI boom, computer memory prices have surged over 500% in the past year, and are now 10 times higher than their historical low. A 32GB DDR5 6000 kit currently sells for around $400 USD (roughly NT$13,000). Against this backdrop of supply-demand imbalance, counterfeiters have set their sights on this market. Multiple types of fake DDR5 memory modules have appeared on the market—some have DDR4 or even DDR3 chips soldered onto DDR5 substrates, others use plastic boards to pass off as DRAM chips, and there are even sealed packages bought on Amazon that turn out to contain DDR2 modules with fake counterweights. These counterfeits look increasingly convincing, to the point where even experienced DIY PC builders can be fooled.

Japanese users’ hands-on testing reveals three disguise techniques exposed

Twitter user @taki_pc_1115 On May 10, 2026, he issued the first warning. The DDR5 memory he purchased looked no different from genuine products on the outside, but after removing the chips and cutting them open, he found that the so-called “DRAM chips” were just plastic boards printed with labels and serial numbers resembling the genuine ones. 


After more than three months, another user @watagjt On August 25, another counterfeiting method was revealed. On the DDR5 module he purchased, the chips were indeed genuine memory ICs, but they were actually DDR4 chips, not DDR5. After disassembly, obvious flux residue and unused pads were visible on the substrate, both signs of re-soldering. On genuine DDR5, the BGA solder balls should extend to the chip edge, but they were not visible on this counterfeit.

@watagjt followed up further on August 27, confirming that the chip’s pin definitions match DDR3 specifications—rather than DDR4 or DDR5—by measuring the Vdd (power) and Vss (ground) pin configurations. He prepared a 4GB DDR3 2Rx8 memory module (using 16 chips) and a counterfeit DDR5 (also 16 chips) for comparison, continuing to investigate the true identity of this batch of counterfeit products.

Not Just Japan: Amazon’s Sealed Packaging Also Affected

Counterfeit issues aren’t limited to the gray market. Videocardz reports that some consumers have purchased sealed DDR5 memory kits on Amazon, only to find DDR2 modules inside after opening the package, along with a fake weight plate to make the packaging feel like the genuine product. These cases are typically the result of return fraud: buyers put counterfeit items back in the original packaging and return them, and Amazon then resells them.

Fraudsters have even developed a more systematic method of counterfeiting: relabeling empty plastic chips to disguise them as genuine Samsung or SK Hynix DRAM, soldering them onto PCBs, and then attaching counterfeit labels and serial number stickers.

Why is DDR5 particularly easy to counterfeit?

Since the launch of DDR5 memory in 2021, prices have experienced multiple fluctuations. From late 2025 to early 2026, driven by a surge in demand for high-bandwidth memory from AI servers, DDR5 spot prices rose sharply, with some specifications seeing increases of over 500%. The high prices expanded profit margins for counterfeit products and also made consumers more likely to let their guard down during shortages.

DDR5’s physical design also gives fraudsters an opening. DDR5 modules move the power management IC (PMIC) from the motherboard onto the memory stick itself, making the modules look more complex than DDR4 and easier to tamper with at the chip level. Combined with the fact that DDR5’s BGA package size is similar to DDR4’s, the technical barrier to soldering older-generation chips onto DDR5 substrates is low. Cases in the Japanese market show that these counterfeit products mainly circulate through second-hand trading platforms and small online stores, with sellers typically pricing them low under the pretext of “inventory clearance” or “untested,” exploiting buyers’ tendency to seek bargains to close the deal.

How to identify fake DDR5 memory

Based on the experiences of multiple victims and media reports, here are several ways to identify counterfeit DDR5:

  • Check the BGA solder balls at the chip edge.On genuine DDR5, the BGA solder balls extend to the edge of the chip. On counterfeit ones, these solder balls are usually not visible, or only residual flux marks remain.
  • Cross-check labels and serial numbers.Enter the model number on the module label and the printed markings on the DRAM chips into a search engine to verify whether they are genuine product numbers.
  • Pay attention to packaging and weight.Sealed packaging doesn’t mean it’s safe. In Amazon return fraud cases, counterfeiters even replicate the weight plates.
  • Check seller reviews before purchasing.Avoid buying from sellers with too few reviews or unclear backgrounds, especially products priced significantly below market value.
  • On-machine testingAfter purchase, confirm the memory’s actual specifications as soon as possible using tools like CPU-Z or Thaiphoon Burner, including the manufacturer, timing parameters, and generation. If the software fails to identify it correctly, it is very likely counterfeit.
  • Prioritize purchasing from reputable channels.Purchase from authorized dealers or products sold directly by major e-commerce platforms to reduce the risk of buying counterfeit goods.

Conclusion

The problem of counterfeit DDR5 memory began to surface in early 2026, and as prices continue to climb, the counterfeiting methods have become increasingly sophisticated. From the earliest use of plastic boards disguised as chips to the later practice of re-soldering older-generation DDR3/DDR4 chips onto DDR5 circuit boards, scammers’ techniques have been steadily advancing. For consumers, the most practical way to protect themselves is to buy from trusted channels, inspect the product immediately upon delivery, verify the specifications with software, and return the item promptly if any irregularities are found. Memory is the foundation of stable computer operation—installing a counterfeit module can be as mild as failing to boot, or as severe as damaging the motherboard or other components. This is not something to take lightly.

From an industry perspective, this issue won’t disappear in the short term. As long as DDR5 supply remains tight and prices stay high, counterfeiters will have enough profit incentive. Major memory manufacturers and e-commerce platforms need to strengthen supply chain controls and return inspection processes, while consumers must remain vigilant and try to buy from reputable physical or online stores. Don’t skip verification steps just because a price is cheap, or you may end up as a fraud victim.
