Earlier this week, ASUS confirmed that the latest high-end model in its ROG Xbox Ally handheld series, the ROG Xbox Ally X20, will go on sale on October 15 at a price of $1,299, with pre-orders opening at the same time. This line of handheld PCs originally debuted in 2023, and in 2025 ASUS officially began partnering with Microsoft Xbox, launching a series of new handheld devices.
Just a year ago, ASUS and Microsoft officially launched the first-generation ROG Xbox Ally handheld. The more powerful Ally X originally launched at $999.99, featuring an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage, already placing it at a premium price point in the PC handheld market. As for the upcoming X20, it will continue with similar hardware specifications while comprehensively enhancing and refining many details of the console’s screen, controls, and body design.
The ROG Xbox Ally X20 will feature a 7.4-inch 1080p OLED touchscreen with support for up to a 120Hz refresh rate, along with FreeSync Premium Pro, Dolby Vision HDR, and up to 1,400 nits of HDR peak brightness. As for the hardware, the X20 directly carries over the Ally X’s specs, using the same processor, memory, and storage.
On the other hand, ASUS also offers an ultra-luxury bundle priced at $2,499, which, in addition to the Ally X20 handheld itself, includes ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 AR glasses, a customized dbrand Killswitch, a 68W power adapter, and a Pelican brand protective case.
Although the specs remain identical to the previous generation, the biggest upgrade on the Ally X20 is still the OLED display—but that’s not the only change. ASUS has added new designs to this handheld, including TMR analog sticks, a transformable D-pad, circular ABXY buttons, improved shoulder buttons and triggers, and rubber anti-slip grips. The screen also offers 100% DCI-P3 color gamut coverage and an anti-reflective coating, while the battery stays at 80Wh.
In terms of exterior design, the Ally X20 features a black translucent chassis that gives players a glimpse of the redesigned cooling system underneath. In addition, the gold accents on the body make this new product—which also serves as ROG’s 20th anniversary commemorative device—stand out even more.
However, the Ally X20’s price tag of $1,299 may indeed deter quite a few fans, especially since it brings no hardware improvements over the previous generation yet costs a full $300 more. As such, the console’s value depends on how much individual players value the OLED screen and other ergonomic design improvements.
