How big is the upgrade between the Apple M6 and M5 chips?

As Apple Silicon continues to evolve, Apple has completed another product generation transition in under a year. Looking back at October 2025, Apple was the first to bring the all-new M5 chip to the 14-inch MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and Apple Vision Pro; by early 2026, the company further introduced the higher-tier M5 Pro and M5 Max, expanding the overall product lineup. Then in August 2026, Apple officially unveiled the M6 chip as the successor to the M5, marking the arrival of the next-generation processor family.

As the first product in the M6 series, the M6 chip debuts in the new Mac mini, making it one of the highlights of the launch event. Also unveiled is the M5 Ultra, the most powerful member of the M5 series, whose performance pushes even further beyond the previously released M5 Max and M5 Pro, making it the current performance flagship of the M5 family. For consumers, however, the biggest question isn’t what new chips Apple has introduced, but how much real improvement this brand-new M6 actually delivers, and whether it’s enough to make existing M5 devices feel outdated.

M6’s biggest highlight: first entry into the 2nm process

The most attention-grabbing upgrade of the M6 is undoubtedly its adoption of the brand-new 2nm process technology. This is not only the core feature of the M6, but also makes it Apple’s first chip product built with the 2nm process.

From a historical development perspective, Apple launched its first 3nm chip, the A17 Pro, in 2023, and subsequently expanded the related technology to the M-series products. Now, after more than three years of development, it has finally moved toward the 2nm process generation. In theory, a more advanced process can bring higher computing efficiency, lower power consumption, and better thermal performance, but the actual results still need to be verified through real-world testing.

Comprehensive upgrades across CPU, GPU, and AI capabilities

In addition to process improvements, the M6 has also been strengthened in terms of core architecture. First, on the CPU side, the M6 has been upgraded from the 10-core configuration in the M5 to a 12-core setup, consisting of 2 super cores, 4 high-performance cores, and 6 energy-efficient cores. Apple says the new architecture further improves single-core computing performance and delivers better overall execution efficiency.

The GPU has also been upgraded. The M6 features a 12-core GPU, while the M5 uses a 10-core design. The extra computing resources allow for higher performance in graphics processing and AI workloads, with Apple claiming the GPU delivers about 30% better performance than the M5 in AI-related computations.

AI capability is another key focus. The M5 utilizes a single 16-core Neural Engine, while the M6 is further equipped with dual 16-core Neural Engines, enabling the device to process generative AI, machine learning inference, and various intelligent features with greater efficiency.

In addition, the M6 also updates the GPU architecture, strengthening shader core design, dynamic cache mechanisms, and hardware ray tracing technology, further boosting performance in high-load applications such as gaming, 3D graphics, and professional content creation. Unified memory bandwidth also increases from 150GB/s on the M5 to 170GB/s, a rise of about 10%, which helps improve overall data transfer efficiency.

Do M5 users need to upgrade?

Although the M6 brings notable technical advancements, for most M5 users, the need to upgrade is actually not that compelling. After all, the M5 has been on the market for less than a year and still delivers excellent performance and power efficiency. For everyday work, productivity tasks, video editing, and even certain professional creative workloads, the M5 remains more than capable of handling use cases for years to come. So while the M6 offers more advanced specs, average users may not experience a noticeable difference in real-world usage.

Even for users still on the M4 chip series, there’s no urgent need to upgrade right now. Unless your work involves heavy AI computing, professional image processing, or other high-intensity workloads, your current device still holds considerable value. In contrast, users still on M3, M2, or even earlier Apple Silicon devices may be the ones the M6 is most worth targeting. The performance gains, energy efficiency improvements, and AI feature evolution from jumping two to three generations will be far more noticeable than upgrading from M5 to M6.

Overall, the M6 indeed marks Apple’s entry into a new 2nm era for its chips, bringing comprehensive upgrades across CPU, GPU, AI computing, and memory bandwidth. However, for users who already own M5 devices, these improvements aren’t substantial enough to justify an immediate upgrade. Those who stand to gain the most from the M6 are still first-time Mac buyers, as well as consumers still using older Apple Silicon devices that are more than three years old.
