In recent months, Sony Interactive Entertainment has faced intense criticism from the gaming community over its push for a “fully digital ecosystem.” The initiative aims to gradually phase out physical discs in favor of an all-digital content environment. Before the controversy had even subsided, Sony appears to have quietly set in motion another strategy with far-reaching implications that is equally prone to sparking debate: introducing advertising into the PlayStation ecosystem.

As game development costs rise, Sony is quietly preparing to introduce advertising into the PlayStation ecosystem.
This move comes at a time when game development costs continue to rise, and as the production scale of major titles keeps expanding, the industry is broadly seeking new revenue sources to avoid further raising game prices. Some analysts believe that advertising could become an effective way for game companies to supplement revenue without adding burden to players.

According to Digiday’s reportSony is building a full advertising department within PlayStation, with related job openings surfacing across multiple locations worldwide. First is a “Global Director” position posted in mid-July 2026, responsible for overall advertising strategy planning for the PlayStation platform. Another senior role in California focuses on managing the ad delivery system, precise audience targeting, and ensuring data processing complies with privacy protection principles. Additionally, a similar vacancy briefly appeared in London, and Tokyo also posted advertising positions related to sales. These signs indicate that Sony is recruiting advertising talent globally and confirm external speculation that it is preparing to build a PlayStation advertising ecosystem.

eMarketer technology analyst Jacob Bourne noted that Sony’s timing is no coincidence. Modern gamers now spend about as much time playing games as they do watching social media videos, yet advertisers’ spending in gaming is far lower than in other media formats. For Sony, with its massive player base, this is an underdeveloped market with huge potential.

In fact, Sony is not new to introducing ads into games. As early as 2008, the company experimented with in-game ad placements during the PS3 era and launched branded content in PlayStation Home; in 2022, there were also reports that Sony was exploring the possibility of “placing ads directly into games,” showing that its interest in this direction is not something that has only recently emerged.

Notably, Sony is not the only company investing in in-game advertising; competitors such as EA and Microsoft’s Xbox division are also actively researching or deploying related strategies to cope with rising development costs and expand revenue streams. As the gaming industry’s business models continue to evolve, advertising could become the next battleground in platform competition.
Overall, Sony’s latest moves indicate it is rethinking how the PlayStation ecosystem operates, from pushing digitalization to exploring advertising revenue. These strategies reflect the company’s attempt to find new room for growth amid cost pressures and market changes. Whether the PlayStation user experience will change as a result remains to be seen, but Sony’s groundwork has already quietly begun.
