Android sideloading compromise coming in August, requiring 24 hours to install unverified apps

Sideloading has been one of Android’s core features since its inception, and the flexibility it brings not only shapes Android’s open spirit but also allows developers to explore freely. When Google announced that it would drastically adjust the sideloading mechanism, the community was naturally uneasy. However, as Google announced the details of the new sideloading process, people were relieved that sideloading has not been cancelled, and the compromise proposed by Google seems to be quite close to ideal.

Some outsiders regard “Android Developer Verification” as the end of Android’s openness. The change, announced by Google last year, aims to restrict all app installation methods (including sideloading) and requires developers to register with Google before their apps can be installed on Android devices. At the time, Google compared it to “airport security” to confirm whether the source of the application was trustworthy. The core goal of this measure has always been to combat fraud, including malware disguised as legitimate apps and attacks distributed through non-Play Store sources. Google has been beefing up Android’s fraud protections for years, and blocking suspicious sideloaded apps has had some success.

This week, Google finally demonstrated a new “advanced process” that allows users and developers to still sideload apps from unregistered developers. The new process consists of four steps. Users need to first confirm that “no one is telling me to”, and then a 24-hour waiting period will be initiated. The timer will not start until the device is restarted. After 24 hours, reconfirm the risk to continue sideloading. If you select “Indefinite” to enable delay, this waiting period will only occur once. In other words, this is actually a one-time procedure. The only troublesome thing is that you need to enable developer options, but you can also turn them off later. Google plans to push this process to all Android versions starting in August 2026.

Google has repeatedly emphasized that adjusting sideloading is not to restrict freedom, but to protect users, especially in areas where scams are rampant. This change will not prevent developers or advanced users from doing what they want to do, but will build a security line for ordinary users. The most common tactics used by scammers are “time pressure” and “sense of urgency.” The 24-hour waiting period plus additional warnings are an obstacle to this type of fraud. It is also an important protection for users who are easily deceived.

This is a design that takes into account security and flexibility. General users need to wait, but developers and advanced players can still sideload immediately through ADB. This may be troublesome for the average person, but it’s even more troublesome for scammers. And for those who really can’t wait, ADB is still a clear path. What’s more, in many cases, users won’t encounter these processes at all, and sideloading won’t be subject to any delays or additional restrictions as long as the developer completes registration.
