Google starts letting users change Gmail usernames, new feature starts rolling out in the US

In an era when almost all online services require email as identification, having a “visible” email address has become more important than ever. However, the real trouble is often not the present, but the self more than ten years ago. When you were an ignorant teenager and registered for Gmail or other email addresses for the first time, you may have thought that certain letter combinations, game IDs, anime character names, or middle school quotes were extremely cool, so you stuffed them into your email address without hesitation. As a result, looking back ten years later, this string of letters seemed to be the dark history of your adolescence, but it was deeply bound to all your online accounts.

So you are faced with a dilemma: should you make up your mind to say goodbye to this embarrassing old address, or should you continue to bear the marks of your youth and frivolity and pretend that everything is normal?

In fact, the problem is so common that even Google has noticed. Over the years, many users have wanted to change their Gmail username, but Gmail has always been designed based on the principle that “the address cannot be changed.” This has made many people regret it and can only silently endure the email name that no longer suits their image. Now, Google has finally relented and officially launched the Gmail address change function, allowing users to re-create their digital identities.

According to Google’s official blog Announcements from The Keyword, users can now edit their Gmail address directly in their Google Account settings. The operation method is quite intuitive: after entering the account settings, click “Personal Information”, then find “Email”, and then click “Google Account Email”. If your account is eligible to be changed, you will see a prominent blue button “Change Google Account Email”. Once you click it, you’ll be able to choose a new Gmail address for yourself.

However, this feature is currently limited. The bad news is that it is only available in the United States for the time being, and users in other countries may have to wait a while before they can officially say goodbye to their 11-year-old secondary mailbox. The good news is that once you successfully change your address, Google will allow the new and old mailboxes to operate at the same time. That is to say, you can still receive emails sent to the old address in the same inbox. You don’t need to update all your online accounts at once, and you don’t have to worry about missing important notifications.

This design undoubtedly greatly lowers the threshold for replacing mailboxes. In the past, if you wanted to change your email address, you would often have to spend days or even weeks updating all services one by one, and worry about missing some accounts. Now, Google helps you handle the transition period more smoothly, allowing you to gradually complete the identity transition without affecting your daily use.

However, Google also reminds users to think twice before pressing the confirm button, because once you change your Gmail address, the system will initiate a 12-month “cooling period.” You won’t be able to change your address again during this year, and you won’t be able to correct any spelling mistakes. In other words, if you accidentally type your name wrong, miss a letter, or suddenly decide your new address isn’t perfect, you’ll have to wait a full year before adjusting it.

This restriction may seem strict, but it also reflects the importance Google places on email identity. After all, Gmail addresses involve many core functions such as login security, account binding, and data synchronization. Frequent changes by users may cause security risks or system chaos. Therefore, Google adopts a cooling-off period system to provide flexibility while maintaining overall stability.

Overall, this new feature is undoubtedly a great boon to many users. It gives people the opportunity to get rid of the embarrassing email addresses of the past and re-create a digital identity that is more in line with their current life and career. Although it is currently limited to the United States, it is likely to gradually expand to other regions in the future. For those who are still trapped in their childhood mailboxes, real liberation may soon be available. If you’ve ever had trouble with your Gmail address, this update is worth looking forward to. After all, who doesn’t want their digital business card to look more presentable?
