Microsoft adds a new disclaimer to Copilot, emphasizing “entertainment use”

In recent years, the rapid rise of AI has triggered a lot of discussion. Many people worry that AI is gradually replacing human skills and even threatening the existence of certain professions. However, there is another side to this phenomenon: the popularity of AI has forced humans to evolve and develop new abilities, especially the ability to identify the authenticity of information. Faced with the confident but potentially erroneous output of AI, we gradually learn how to remain skeptical, how to verify content, and how to find the best way to use AI within limitations. These are skills that we did not need to rely on so strongly in the past.

Microsoft adds a new disclaimer to Copilot, emphasizing “entertainment use”

In fact, many users have become quite good at “AI reading” in the past few years. We know that models can hallucinate, misunderstand problems, and present errors as truth. Therefore, AI companies often add disclaimers to product pages, technical documents, or terms of use to remind users not to blindly trust the output content. Google’s Gemini IntroductionThis is a typical example: while introducing the capabilities of the model, it also clearly lists the limitations and emphasizes that users should judge the reliability of the information by themselves.

However, a recent move by Microsoft has caused a lot of discussion. Like other AI companies, Microsoft actively promotes Copilot’s powerful capabilities, showing how it can help companies formulate strategies, write documents, analyze data, and improve efficiency. These claims seem entirely reasonable, as modern AI platforms emphasize that they can help users complete important tasks. But the problem lies in another place, Microsoft’s Copilot Terms of UseA surprising piece of text appeared in it. according to Tom’s Hardware The terms and conditions read:

「Copilot 僅供娛樂用途。」

This sentence may seem simple, but it instantly makes the tone of the entire document strange. After all, one second Microsoft was telling enterprise customers that Copilot could help formulate strategies and improve productivity, and the next second it said in legal documents that it was “for entertainment purposes only.” This gap makes people wonder: What does Microsoft want users to think of Copilot?

The terms go on to add:

「它可能會出錯,也可能無法如預期運作,請勿依賴 Copilot 提供重要建議,使用 Copilot 需自行承擔風險。」

If you look at this content alone, it is actually not special. All AI companies will remind users: models may make mistakes, outputs need to be verified, and AI should not be regarded as professional consultants. These are reasonable and necessary warnings. But what’s really strange is that Microsoft seems to feel that this is not enough, so it has repeatedly added a tone similar to “this is a joke” in the document, as if to emphasize that Copilot should not be regarded as a tool for any serious purpose. This tone is completely inconsistent with Microsoft’s positioning in the market, and it is no wonder that it triggers confusion and ridicule from the outside world.

From a practical perspective, this is likely to be an extreme approach taken by the legal team to reduce risks. After all, the unpredictability of AI does place some liability on companies, and lawyers will often choose the most conservative approach to protecting businesses. However, this “overcorrection” approach has embarrassed Microsoft: on the one hand, it hopes that enterprises will regard Copilot as a core tool to improve efficiency, but on the other hand, it hints in the terms that “don’t take it too seriously, this is just entertainment.” This inconsistency begs the question: if Microsoft was really concerned that Copilot’s output might be misleading, shouldn’t it have first let Copilot check the terms themselves to identify any confusing areas? But according to the terms themselves, Copilot is clearly not meant for this kind of thing, as it’s “for entertainment purposes only.”

The whole thing highlights a larger issue: AI companies often want to emphasize capabilities when promoting their products, but must acknowledge limitations in legal documents. The tension between the two is becoming more and more obvious, and it also reflects that the entire industry is still exploring how to strike a balance between innovation and responsibility. Ultimately, these terms serve as a reminder that no matter how powerful AI becomes, humans will still need to think critically. AI can assist us, but it cannot make decisions for us; it can provide information, but it cannot be guaranteed to be correct; it can speed up processes, but it cannot replace judgment. Perhaps this is the most important skill in the AI era, knowing how to coexist with imperfect intelligence.
