A Japanese netizen bought 1 Intel Core i5-14400 on Amazon, received 5 of them, and finally returned 4 of them.
According to foreign media NotebookCheck, a Japanese netizen Masamine Masamine (@masamine_s) shared in the X community a few days ago: “I bought a CPU from Amazon and received five of them. I was shocked”:
Judging from the photos, what arrived were not bulk processors or unpacked returns, but five boxes of complete-looking retail versions of the Core i5-14400.
Core i5-14400 is the 14th generation desktop processor launched by Intel in 2024. It is a mid-range product for the general consumer market. It adopts a hybrid architecture of 6 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores, with a total of 10 cores and 16 threads, with a maximum clock speed of 4.7GHz, and is equipped with 20MB Intel Smart Cache. The processor has a base power consumption of 65W, uses LGA1700 pins, and also has a built-in Intel UHD Graphics 730 display chip.
A Core i5-14400 costs about 36,000 yen in Japan, which is about NT$7,110. At this price, the total of five pieces is 180,000 yen, with a total value of more than NT$35,000.
After deducting the one he originally paid for, the extra four are worth about 144,000 yen, which is close to NT$28,400 in conversion.
As for why five pills were sent out at once, the exact reason has not been announced yet. According to the speculations of netizens and foreign media, when Intel processors are sent to channels and warehouses, five boxes of retail versions may be packed in the same delivery box. When the warehouse personnel were tallying the goods, they may have scanned the barcode on the outer shipping box, but the system mistook the entire box for one item, and finally shipped it in the original box.
This speculation can also explain why the number is exactly five, rather than one or two more randomly placed. However, Amazon has not confirmed whether it was caused by the barcode, the system or the operations of tally personnel. At this stage, it can only be regarded as the most likely theory.
After the post was made public, many netizens left comments below, suggesting that buyers keep silent until Amazon finds out on its own. Some people thought that they could just keep it or simply sell the extra processors. After all, this is Amazon’s fault. The buyer did not place an order for five pieces, nor did he deliberately use any means to obtain additional products:
However, Masamine Segawa did not act on these suggestions. He chose to contact Amazon and return the four extra Core i5-14400s he received, leaving only the one he originally purchased and paid for. A shipping error that might have cost Amazon nearly 150,000 yen ended successfully because the buyer was willing to handle it honestly:
I can only say that I am worthy of being Japanese. But it didn’t cause him any trouble at all. He later complained in a reply to Amazon Help that Amazon seemed to let consumers be responsible for packaging and return procedures.
