YouTube is adjusting the way users share video clips. The “Clips” feature that has existed for many years is about to become history. The platform is also simultaneously enhancing the visibility of other sharing tools on mobile devices. This change not only affects general audiences, but also involves how creators use short clips to reach new audiences.

YouTube officially cancels the “clip clip” function and replaces it with “share specified time point” on the mobile version
The launch of the “clip” feature allows users to capture 5 to 60 second clips from long videos or live broadcasts and share them as separate links. Many creators also use this tool to promote content so that viewers can quickly understand the highlights of the video. YouTube admitted in its announcement: “We recognize that community editing is an important way for creators to reach new audiences.” However, although existing clips will still be available to view, the platform has confirmed that it will phase out the ability to create new clips.

In their place is a new set of editing tools that are more creator-focused. YouTube says it will roll out more integrated creator edits features in 2026, andThe first wave of updates is now available in YouTube Studio. The new Video Editing tool lets creators republish highlights from long-form videos or archived live streams, and manage, edit and promote this content in a more formal way. Officials have also provided relevant tutorials in the Help Center to help creators understand how to use these new tools.

YouTube also revealed that this “video editing” feature will be expanded to Shorts later this year, allowing creators to more directly convert long video content into short video and audio formats. The platform is also preparing to launch an “auto-suggestion” function, which will use algorithms to help creators find the most interesting moments in videos that are worth editing, reducing the time and cost of manually finding highlights. Overall, YouTube is trying to shift the editing function from “viewer-led” to “creator-led” and integrate it into a more complete content ecosystem.

In addition to updates to creator tools, YouTube has also made adjustments to how general users share. The platform has finally officially introduced the “share specified time point” function to the mobile versions of YouTube App for iOS and Android. This feature has existed on the desktop version for many years, and has also appeared sporadically on the Android version, but in the past it has been in a state of “available to some users and unavailable to some users” and has never been officially fully launched. Now, YouTube has finally made the feature available to all mobile device users, although technically the platform has never publicly announced its existence.
Now, when a user clicks the “Share” button, a switch will appear in the upper right corner of the pop-up window, allowing the user to choose whether to start sharing the video from a specific point in time. This allows users to more accurately guide friends or communities to see a certain section of the video without having to manually enter the time or add annotations.

Overall, this wave of YouTube adjustments shows two clear directions: on the one hand, the platform hopes to give creators more powerful official editing tools and incorporate editing behavior into YouTube’s content strategy; on the other hand, YouTube is also improving the sharing experience for general users, making the behavior of “pointing to specific clips” more intuitive and consistent.
Although the withdrawal of the “video editing” function may be a loss for some users, judging from YouTube’s strategy, the platform is trying to shift the editing behavior from “community-spontaneous” to “creator-led” and create a larger-scale content cycle through Shorts, ecological integration and algorithm recommendations. It remains to be seen how these tools will be adopted by creators in the future and whether they can truly improve film reach and viewing experience.
