Fitbit’s latest update turns the app into a conversational personal trainer

Fitbit now no longer just silently keeps track of your steps, heart rate, or hours of sleep. With the latest Fitbit 4.68 update, the app is quietly transforming from a simple health tracking tool to an AI health coach that can talk to you, provide advice, and even actively accompany you through your daily training. Fitbit 4.68 is currently being rolled out to Android and iOS users, according to Report by 9to5Google, this is the most obvious update in recent functional changes. It not only makes up for the previously missing functions, but also brings a more interactive and personalized user experience.

Fitbit’s latest update turns the app into a conversational personal trainer

One of the most talked about highlights of this update is that the Android version has rejoined the “Sleep Log Editing” function. This tool disappeared in the old version, causing inconvenience to many users who were accustomed to manually adjusting sleep records. Now it is finally back. For users who are unfamiliar with this feature, sleep log editing allows you to manually override the sleep period automatically detected by Fitbit through the pop-up menu when viewing your sleep summary the next day. This feature can come in handy if you were lying in bed scrolling on your phone the night before, woke up in the middle of the night and forgot to put your watch back on, or the sleep detection was not accurate enough. Google says the same capability will be added to the iOS version soon.

In addition to the return of the sleep function, Fitbit has also significantly adjusted the interaction methods related to Coach. After the update, the app will intersperse more personalized motivational messages on the “Today” page and provide different content according to different times of the day. For example: in the morning, it can remind you of yesterday’s activity results and give you today’s suggestions; provide training summary and recovery suggestions after exercise; at the end of the day or week, review your progress and propose the next step. These messages are no longer just cold data, but more like a real coach, always by your side to give you encouragement, reminders and direction.

The most symbolic change in this update is the new “Conversational Check-in”, which allows users to interact with Fitbit coaches in a more natural way through a text interface. In the past, Fitbit’s coaching functions mostly relied on fixed processes, inputting data, waiting for system analysis, and then receiving suggestions. Now, these steps have been integrated into a more intuitive conversation form. You can directly enter questions such as “A bit tired today, do you still want to exercise?”, “I want to increase the running distance”, “This week’s training is too difficult”, and the system will respond immediately and adjust the suggestions according to your status. This interactive method is closer to the communication mode of human coaches and eliminates the need for users to switch between multiple pages.

When Fitbit Coach schedules a workout for you, the app now provides step-by-step instructions on the screen, which is especially helpful for users who are new to exercise or unfamiliar with workout content. In addition, Fitbit has also adjusted the way it sets weekly goals. In the past, the suggestions were more general, but now they will be tailored based on your health status, past activity level and personal goals. This means that even if two users choose the same type of exercise, they may receive completely different suggestions. Google also revealed that future updates will add the ability to “adjust training plans through dialogue.” In other words, you can directly tell Fitbit, “I’m going on a business trip next week, can the training be a little easier?”, “I want to strengthen core training,” etc., and the system will adjust your plan in real time.

At first glance, Fitbit 4.68 seems to be just a regular update, but the signal behind it is quite clear. Google is gradually transforming Fitbit from a “wearable device accessory application” into an “AI-driven health guidance platform.” This direction is not groundless. In addition to this conversational feature, signs related to Google Health’s rebranding have also leaked recently, indicating that Google may be preparing to incorporate Fitbit into a larger health product strategy.

If everything goes as expected, Fitbit is likely to become an important core of Google’s health ecosystem at Google I/O in 2026, instead of just a supporting application for smart watches.
