Google’s “Preferred Sources” search function expands globally, so you can actually see the websites you like

In the past, Google’s news ranking relied mainly on algorithms to predict your interests, but this approach often caused users to miss the publications they really wanted to follow. The core idea of ”Preferred Sources” is simple. It allows users to see the media they really care about, trust or like more often in Google News and search results, rather than relying entirely on algorithms to decide what you should read. With Preferred Sources, you can directly specify which websites should appear first when searching for a specific news topic.

It is worth noting that this feature is not intended to exclude other news sources, nor is it intended to turn search results into a single-perspective information bubble. Google’s design direction is more like “ensuring that the media you value most will not be overwhelmed while maintaining multiple sources.” In other words, it’s not about narrowing search results, it’s about making it easier for you to see what you really want to see.

This tool was initially only available in some regions and languages. Google originally planned to expand it to all English speakers by the end of 2025. However, as the feedback during the test period gradually matured, Google decided to relax the restrictions in advance and inrecently announced“Preferred Sources” has officially been opened to users in all supported languages around the world. This is a global rollout faster than originally scheduled, showing Google’s confidence and importance in this feature.

If you want to set your own “preferred sources”, you can go directly to google.com/preferences/source. The interface is quite intuitive. You can add any media you want to see first, including large-scale international news websites, local media, professional blogs, and even the entire computer king Ada website can be added with one click. After the setting is completed, Google will give priority to reports from these sources when you search for news-related topics.

Google said that since its launch, this tool has been marked as the preferred source by users on “more than 200,000 unique websites.” This number ranges from niche local social networking sites to global news media, showing that user preferences are very diverse and reflects people’s desire to have more active control over information sources.
