There are more and more ads in Google Maps, which has become a problem for users

I open Google Maps almost every day, and for the same reasons as most people: looking for coffee shops, pharmacies, gas stations, and occasionally searching for new coffee shops to try nearby. It’s supposed to be the fastest, most direct way to find my next destination in the real world, and yet, precisely because it’s so important, Google Maps’ biggest problem in 2026 feels extra frustrating.

There are more and more ads in Google Maps, which has become a problem for users

In recent years, Google has continued to add new features to maps, especially after the introduction of Gemini technology, the search method has become more natural and smarter. In theory, I can directly ask it “Is there a quiet cafe nearby with good parking?” and it will indeed understand my intention and give results that seem to be more relevant to my needs. This part is indeed progress, but the problem is: just because the search method has become better, it does not mean that the search results have become more reliable.

What really bothers me is that the entire core experience is diluted by low-quality business listings, overly prominent ads, fake reviews, and inconsistent local information. Google Maps is getting better and better at understanding what I’m asking, but it’s getting harder and harder to convince me that the answer it’s giving me is what I actually want. This is a larger structural problem, because Google Maps has become more than just a navigation tool. It has become the first stop for many people to make decisions about “where to go next.” When I’m searching for brunch or a repair center, I want trustworthy information, not an interface that requires me to dissect “which are real results and which are ads.”

The first and most obvious problem I encountered was that local searches were becoming increasingly difficult. In the search results, sponsored merchants will be placed in the most prominent position, and even directly pinned to the map; the natural search results are mixed with advertisements, making it difficult to distinguish at a glance which ones are paid exposures and which ones are real recommendations based on evaluation and distance ranking. This confusion makes the overall experience blurry, and even makes people doubt whether what they are seeing is still “what the local real world looks like.”

I understand why Google does this. Advertising is its core business, and Maps is one of the most commercially valuable exposure platforms. For many businesses, search traffic on maps is an important marketing channel. However, when I just want to make a quick decision about where to eat or where to get my car repaired, I don’t want to have to spend time deciding whether “this result is because it’s good or because it pays.” This uncertainty directly changed the way I use Google Maps. I began to read reviews more carefully, compare photos, and even open other applications to cross-check information. These processes that should not exist have now become necessary steps.

To make matters worse, the quality of the business information itself is declining. I still get business hours errors, duplicate business profiles, inaccurate targeting, and even store descriptions that are obviously keyword stuffed. Reviews are no longer as reliable as in the past. Some businesses will buy a large number of positive reviews to create an illusion that is completely different from the actual experience. This is especially common in service industries such as utilities, moving, and maintenance. Everyone knows that some of the problems come from the merchants themselves, but as a platform, Google should take more proactive measures, such as lowering the ranking of suspicious listings, strengthening the review mechanism, and combating review fraud. After all, finding the wrong coffee shop will end up with a bad cup of coffee, but in an emergency, wrong information can have far more serious consequences, and that’s when users start to lose trust in the entire system.

Google has said that it removes millions of fake reviews and fake business information every year, and is also using Gemini AI to detect suspicious behavior. This means that the company is aware that the problem exists, but from a user perspective, these efforts are still not enough to offset the overall decline in quality.

For most people, Google Maps is the first step before shopping, dining, or finding services. It should simplify decision-making, not make it more confusing. Once considered the gold standard for crowdsourced information, Google reviews and business profiles are now tainted by spam, ads, and over-prioritized sponsored results, which not only worsens the user experience, but also harms honest businesses who work hard to compete on a level playing field. Despite this, I still rely on Google Maps because it still has the most complete data, but if Google doesn’t face up to these problems, improve search quality, and increase the credibility of its information, then I and many users may really start looking for alternatives.
