Xiaomi’s air conditioner got burned like this and still works! Even the official said: “We’re stunned.”

Recently, Xiaomi air conditioners suddenly became the center of online attention in China. A fire broke out suddenly at a charging device in a home in Hebei, causing extensive damage to all the furniture and decor in the house. But after the fire was extinguished, the Xiaomi air conditioner located above the point of origin — after being roasted by the flames for several dozen minutes — still cooled normally when tested with power. This real footage spread rapidly across social platforms like Weibo and Douyin, and the related topic quickly rose to the top of Weibo’s hot search list. Even senior executives at Xiaomi Group publicly stated they were “shocked.”

Incident details: The charging equipment caught fire, and the air conditioner was at the epicenter of the blaze.

According to Chinese media reports, a fire broke out inside a local household on the day of the incident, with the source traced to charging equipment (possibly a charger or power bank). Since the flames rose from directly below the air conditioner, this wall-mounted Xiaomi air conditioner was positioned at the epicenter of the fire. Its plastic casing was melted and deformed by the open flames, with molten casing dripping and hanging from the unit, causing severe external damage.

Mr. Tsao (Tsao Chiu-chao), who recovered the air conditioner after the incident, pointed out in a media interview that all other small appliances and furniture from other brands in the house were burned or had short-circuit failures. Only the Xiaomi air conditioner’s entire system did not catch fire on its own, with only the outer casing showing signs of melting.

Core functions are fully operational: cooling, temperature control display, and remote control all work properly.

Mr. Cao further explained that after the fire, he ran a power-on test on the air conditioner, and the results were surprising: the temperature control screen, refrigeration lines, and remote control adjustment functions were all intact, and the set temperature could be freely switched with the remote control. The only damaged part was the internal fan wheel, which had become deformed due to the high heat and could no longer deliver air properly, but the rest of the circuitry and compressor components were completely undamaged.

From the on-site photos, it is clearly visible that the front casing of the air conditioner is severely deformed, with melted plastic dripping down. However, the core area inside the unit shows no signs of direct flame intrusion. After Mr. Cao opened the casing, he discovered an additional high-temperature-resistant insulation layer inside, and both the circuit board and wiring terminals were fitted with flame-retardant insulating sleeves. With these multiple layers of protection, even if the casing completely melted, high heat and open flames could not penetrate to the core electrical zone.

Flame-retardant material is key: the casing only melts, it does not burn.

The reason this air conditioner survived the fire is primarily because its casing is made of high-standard flame-retardant modified plastic. Materials of this type only soften or melt at high temperatures and do not ignite on their own, thereby creating a high-temperature protective barrier for the internal circuit board, compressor, copper pipes, and other key components, blocking flames from reaching the core electrical elements.

Cao Jiuchao pointed out that the flame-retardant material grade used in Xiaomi air conditioners far exceeds the mandatory threshold of national standards. Taking the product specification page on Carousell Hong Kong as an example, the ABS material of the Xiaomi air conditioner casing achieves V-0 level under the UL94 fire safety standard, which is one of the highest flame-retardant ratings. The raw material procurement cost is 30% higher than ordinary plastic, and despite continued price increases in plastic raw materials in recent years, Xiaomi has not downgraded the specification of its flame-retardant materials.

Additionally, Xiaomi’s entire air conditioner lineup is uniformly equipped with the same high-standard flame-retardant casing and internal thermal insulation protection — this is not an exclusive feature of high-end models. Even entry-level wall-mounted units priced around one thousand yuan use the same safety materials.

Xiaomi senior management responded: We implemented extensive high-temperature tolerant redundant designs.

Xiaomi Group’s Major Appliances Department General Manager Shan Lianyu, on July 31, atstated in a social media post“The Mijia air conditioner has a lot of redundant design for high-temperature resistance, but seeing such a sturdy air conditioner, I was also shocked.” He also reminded users that as summer arrives, fire prevention is essential, and recommended that those who can afford it equip themselves with smart outlets, smoke alarms, smart cameras, and other devices so that danger can be detected promptly in case of an emergency.

Shan Lianyu added that Mijia air conditioners have made high-temperature fire prevention and flame-retardant safety a core standard from the product design stage, with the entire unit structure undergoing thousands of high-temperature open-flame simulation tests to continuously optimize the casing materials and internal thermal insulation structure.

Conclusion

Indoor chargers and power strip overloads during summer are common causes of household fires. In the early stages of a fire, the blaze is usually concentrated around the outlet, and the heat can easily scorch a wall-mounted air conditioner directly above it. Once the air conditioner casing catches fire, the flames quickly spread upward along the appliance, reaching curtains and ceilings, and expanding the scope of damage. Although this incident was just a single case, it happens to provide a real extreme scenario for comparison, allowing consumers to see at a glance how different brands differ in safety design. For consumers, beyond focusing on cooling performance, energy efficiency ratings, and price when purchasing appliances, the invisible safety features—such as flame-retardant casing materials and internal thermal insulation—may be the more important purchasing criteria to weigh.

However, this whole matter should be viewed as a single case; it’s just that it’s still usable after all this is indeed quite astonishing. Also, Xiaomi air conditioners aren’t sold in Taiwan, but Ada bought a grey-market unit a few years ago, and it’s still running normally now (Does Taiwan really have no plans to bring them in?).
