PS5 can finally play PS3 physical discs! Modifiers rely on Linux and emulators to achieve backward compatibility that Sony failed to achieve

For many years since the release of PlayStation 5, Sony has not provided backward compatibility with PS3 physical discs. Players can only play a few selected PS3 games through PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming. But this situation has recently been broken by the modding community: by installing the Linux system on the PS5 and running the RPCS3 emulator, players can already read and execute PS3 physical disc games directly on the PS5, accomplishing something that Sony officials have always been unwilling to do.

Modifiers rely on Linux and emulators to achieve backward compatibility that Sony failed to achieve

From installing Linux on PS5 to running PS3 games

The starting point for it all comes from well-known modding developer Andy Nguyen (account @theflow0). He officially released the PS5-Linux project on April 29, 2026, which exploited the Hypervisor vulnerability in the old PS5 firmware to enable the PS5 to boot a complete Linux desktop system. Once in Linux, PS5’s 8-core 16-thread CPU (3.5 GHz) and GPU (2.23 GHz) can operate like a normal PC. It can not only execute Steam games, but also install various emulators.

The modding community immediately turned their brains to RPCS3. RPCS3 is the most mature PS3 emulator in recent years, supporting Windows, Linux, macOS and FreeBSD platforms. Once the PS5 has successfully booted into Linux, installing RPCS3 is the logical next step. Polish modder @retropierdolnik was the first to demonstrate the results on May 2. He ran the PS3 physical disc of “MotorStorm: Pacific Rift” on PS5 through RPCS3, and said “the game runs as smooth as gold.”

What’s even more exciting is that the RPCS3 development team later confirmed that the latest version of the emulator supports reading PS3 game discs directly from the PS5 Blu-ray Disc drive. Players only need to provide the PS3 decryption key.

Strict hardware and firmware restrictions

However, this option is not available to everyone and has several key limitations. First of all, only the “thick machine” (original model) PS5 is supported, and the latest PS5 Slim currently does not work. Secondly, the PS5 firmware version must be between 3.xx and 4.xx, because this vulnerability has been patched by Sony in the subsequent 5.xx version. This means that most PS5 consoles that continue to be updated will not be able to use this feature.

In addition, PS5-Linux is a software modification (soft mod), not a permanent modification. Every time the host is shut down or restarted, the vulnerable program must be re-executed to enter the Linux system again, and it cannot be freely switched between the PS5 native system and Linux like the dual system. The installation process itself also requires a certain technical threshold, including preparing a USB flash drive or external SSD, USB keyboard and mouse, and an external Bluetooth receiver (because the built-in Bluetooth of the DualSense controller is not yet supported under Linux).

The potential of PS5 hardware to run PS3 emulation

Despite the limitations, this achievement proves that the PS5 hardware is indeed capable of performing PS3 emulation. according totest, PS5’s performance when executing Steam games in a Linux environment is close to the level of native PS5 games. Considering that the PS3 uses the notoriously difficult-to-develop Cell broadband engine architecture, being able to run PS3 games smoothly in software simulation on the PS5 is a remarkable engineering achievement in itself.

Compare Sony’s official plan: providing PS3 cloud streaming through PlayStation Plus Premium, and does not support physical discs. Although this path provided by the modding community has a higher threshold, it gives players a real sense of “ownership”: the PS3 disc in your hand can finally shine again on the PS5.

Sony’s Silence and Community Breakthrough

Sony has yet to take a stance on PS3 backward compatibility. Over the years since the PS5 came out, the official has always insisted on using cloud streaming as the only solution, which has caused dissatisfaction among many players, especially considering the large number of high-quality exclusive works accumulated in the PS3 era. These games are still not playable in physical form on the new console.

The RPCS3 team also continues to improve simulator performance. Recently, they have optimized the ARM64 architecture and introduced a hierarchical grading system for hardware requirements, allowing players to more clearly judge whether their devices can smoothly execute specific games.

This is undoubtedly a coveted feature for players with sufficient technical skills and PS5s with older firmware. For ordinary players, this achievement may also prompt Sony to rethink the official strategy of PS3 downward compatibility. After all, when the modding community can do it, there is no reason for the official to say that it cannot be done.
