If there are any major events in CPUs recently, it is probably the rare stability issues that have occurred with Intel’s 14th generation processors, which has damaged the image that Intel has built among players and businesses over the years. Another thing is that AMD Ryzen 9000 series processors were officially launched, but a problem was discovered at this point in time, that is, there was a strange deviation in the performance of Ryzen 9000. This processor was claimed to bring an IPC increase of 16%, but it lost face in front of various professional technology media at home and abroad. The test data was not as good as AMD’s optimistic expectations.

The IPC of 16% is a very good result for the AMD camp and is enough to arouse players’ expectations for new products. However, even under various tricky angles, the media still find it difficult to endorse this publicity achievement. Even German PC Games Hardware (PCGH) Online media even used Nobara Linux, which is based on Fedora Linux and focuses on gaming applications, as a comparison group for the Windows 11 test. However, the results were somewhat surprising. Nobara Linux performed better than Windows 11 on the same processor.

PCGH’s testing team once set up a platform using Ryzen 7 9700X, DDR5-6400 memory, and RTX 4090 to test the frame rates of the game “Cyber 2077: Free Fantasy”. Although it is a DLC outside the mainline game, it has great requirements on CPU computing power, and it can easily cause the CPU to consume a lot of power and require enhanced heat dissipation.

Nobara Linux slightly edged out Windows 11 with an average of 100.3 frames, which was only 94.6 frames. In addition, the compression and decompression performance of 7-Zip was also tested. In both indicators, Nobara Linux was slightly ahead. This result is obviously surprising.

Judging from the test results, Linux can currently make the most comprehensive use of the performance of the Ryzen 9000 processor, even faintly surpassing Windows. If a more lightweight Linux distribution is used for testing, Ryzen 9000’s results may go even further.
In order to narrow the performance gap between the two systems, AMD has conducted research and determined that the problem lies in an error related to Windows account permissions. This judgment has led some players to use command prompt characters to “unlock” the highest-privileged account function of Windows. It is understood that such an operation not only makes the Ryzen 9000 processor perform better, but also affects Ryzen 7000 and Ryzen 5000. Although the performance improvement is about 3% to 9%, it is at least an idea to solve the problem.
Currently, it is helpful to use commands to temporarily obtain administrator privileges. The method is very simple. Use the command prompt to enter “net user administrator /active:yes” and run this command to obtain the highest privileges regardless of system security.
Since this problem is not solved by AMD with new firmware or new drivers, it will depend on Microsoft to fix it from the root of the system. The patch at this stage is still in testing and will only be placed on Windows 11 24H2 preview systems. Improvements may not be seen until Windows 11 is officially updated to version 24H2 in the future.

AMD claims that the Ryzen 9000 series performs better than older products in terms of branch prediction capabilities. The branch prediction function is excellent enough to minimize the loss of branch mispredictions, and is particularly useful in highly pipelined processor designs. Even a difference of a few percentage points can make a difference in processor performance.
According to AMD’s predictions, using Ryzen 9 9950X to test “Far Cry 6” can achieve a 13% improvement. This game is a single-threaded game and is relatively focused on single-core performance. Therefore, it can be expected that after the patch update, there will be considerable growth in single-core performance. “Dynasty 2077” and “UL Procyon Office” also had a growth rate of 6 to 7%. It appears that this patch should meet AMD user expectations. Those who are slightly dissatisfied are probably that only the 24H2 version of the system has not yet been officially released. Players who have already bought the processor can only use “home remedies” to cheer up or wait and see. It remains to be seen whether Microsoft can solve the problem with this patch update.
