A full conversion to 64-bit-only is bound to cause considerable pain. In this regard, Google has actually put forward requirements for application developers to provide 64-bit support as early as 2019; exceptions to SDKs including Adobe Air and Unity that are outside the regulations are also determined to end in 2021. In short, after years of hard work, at least on Google Play, the main Android app store outside China, 64-bit support is generally complete.
Even in terms of hardware, according to foreign media, not only are basically all SoCs already supported, but some flagship SoCs will even choose to cancel support for running 32-bit encoding for some cores – but there are exceptions… Foreign media pointed out that this may also be because China’s various app stores have not been able to keep up. In fact, it can be seen from the above that the Android system may be moving towards 64-bit-only.
Recently, a developer dug up a bunch of source code in Android 13 AOSP. It mentions something like “Move tangor to 64-bit only”.
Naturally, the keyword “Tangor” should be the most curious part. This is reportedly the rumored development codename of the new Pixel Tablet, which Google has teased but has not yet officially announced. Therefore, it is regarded as the official conversion plan of the Android system to 64-bit-only. It may be implemented from this tablet computer, or at least related tests will be started from this product.
In addition, there is also news that 64-bit-only is likely to become a basic feature of the Android 14 system in 2023. This also coincides with the expected launch of the Pixel Tablet. At this pace, it is at least certain that Google’s related strategy for Android to be limited to 64-bit should very likely have precise news and policies next year. Everyone can look forward to it.
