In Taiwan,LINE It is almost closely connected with our life, work and social life, and “Retract message” function is a life-saving straw for many people when they slip and send the wrong message. Originally, everyone was used to having a buffer time of up to a whole day before repenting. However, LINE officials recently made a major adjustment to the “recall” time limit of messages, which sent a shock bomb to the online community. This offensive and defensive battle about the “right to regret” not only challenges users’ usage habits, but also on the eve of implementation, an unexpected and dramatic turn occurred today. How will this change affect your chat experience? Let’s keep looking.

LINE official sharp turn! The plan to shorten the recall message to 1 hour is on hold, but Taiwanese users still have 24 hours to repent.

Have you ever had this experience? A complaint message that was originally intended to be sent to a best friend was instead sent to the company’s large group group; or an emotional outburst late at night wrote a long series of confessions, only to wake up the next morning and be so ashamed that one wanted to dig a hole and hide. At this time, LINE’s recall message function is simply a salvation sent from heaven. In Taiwan, this function is a psychological defense that almost everyone uses every day, allowing us to maintain a little room for buffering and correction amid the explosion of information and fast-paced conversations.
For a long time, Taiwanese users have been very familiar with the rules for retracting messages. That is, within 24 hours of the message being sent, we can press the “retract” button at any time to let the embarrassment of making a mistake disappear into the air. However, the official recently released a big news, announcing that this regret mechanism that everyone has relied on for a long time will be significantly reduced. As soon as this news came out, it immediately triggered a heated discussion on the Internet. Many netizens said: This is simply shrinking the gap in the regret mechanism to the point where it is almost invisible!

The original plan was as follows. In order to respond to users’ actual usage conditions, officials expected to gradually adjust the time limit for withdrawing messages starting in late December 2025. The core change is that the original 24-hour golden rescue period will be shortened to just one hour. This means that if you send the wrong message at 11 pm, you must find out and deal with it before 12 midnight, otherwise the message will be like poured water and remain in the other party’s chat room forever, becoming an indelible record.

The reason this change caused so much panic was mainly because the one-hour time limit was so short. For many busy office workers, an hour may pass just like having a meeting or having a meal; for those who are used to scrolling on their mobile phones before going to bed, if they wake up and find that they have sent the wrong thing, the precious 60 minutes have already passed. This pressure of “immediacy” makes sending messages suddenly feel like defusing a bomb, requiring careful and repeated confirmation.

Interestingly, although the rules of general chat rooms are about to be tightened, the rules of the LINE community remain unchanged and still retain 24-hour recall flexibility. This also shows that officials have different considerations in different types of communication environments. However, for most people, family, friends and work groups are the most vulnerable areas to disasters, so changes in general chat rooms naturally attract the most attention.

But as this turmoil spreads, today (24) LINE officials suddenly gave everyone a Christmas surprise. Perhaps because they heard the voice of the majority of users, or perhaps because more time is needed internally for system evaluation, the official issued the latest announcement earlier, stating that the planned functional change operation will be “suspended.” In other words, the one-hour time limit that everyone was originally worried about would not be on the road for the time being, and the changed implementation date will be notified separately.

This incident also gives all users a good reminder to re-examine the differences between the two functions of “retract” and “delete”. Many people often get confused. In fact, “retract” can remove messages from both parties’ chat rooms at the same time, while “delete” only clears the screen on one’s phone so that the other party can still see it. In the case that the rules may change at any time in the future, it is the safest way to distinguish the difference between the two and develop the habit of confirming again before sending.

  Retract message Delete message

※Contents that have been deleted from the chat room cannot be recovered.

※Only the “Delete” function key will be displayed after 24 hours.
Can be operated at any time
Whether to notify the other party “Message has been recalled” will be displayed in the chat room The other party will not receive a reminder

The current moratorium undoubtedly gives Taiwanese users some breathing space. Although the 24-hour buffer period has been maintained for the time being, it also shows that the communications software environment is constantly evolving. Maybe in the near future we really need to practice spotting our own clerical errors or impulses within 60 minutes. After all, in the digital age, although there is technical support for withdrawing words after they are spoken, it is always the golden rule to be cautious in words and deeds.

Until a new announcement is made, everyone can breathe a sigh of relief and continue to enjoy that full day of remorse. Still, who knows when the next announcement will come? Before that, I still recommend that everyone be more careful the moment you press the send button, and don’t let a momentary hand slip become a permanent embarrassment.
