Recently, several users on the social platform X shared that they discovered a new Operator feature in the ChatGPT macOS app, which can define shortcuts for the desktop launcher, such as Toggle Operator and Force Quit Operator. Earlier, The Information confirmed this, reporting that the new AI tool could be released as early as this week. Operator is expected to automatically handle many complex tasks typically performed through web browsers, such as restaurant reservations, travel planning, and online shopping.
This tool operates according to different task categories and provides users with corresponding prompts. For example, when making a restaurant reservation, ChatGPT Operator will ask follow-up questions, such as the reservation time and the number of people. After the user answers, Operator will complete the request.
The text also mentions that users can control the screen while Operator is working, without affecting daily use, and can even share tasks with other users.
The Information also noted that initially, Operator cannot control Gmail accounts, but it can help users log in to other websites and maintain logged-in status across sessions, avoiding the need to log in again each time.
Overall, Operator does look quite promising. It feels like a lot of everyday tasks could be handled through it, and if it can also be paired with the Task feature ChatGPT launched a few days ago, it would really enable a use case where AI is still working for you while you sleep.
