After Valve’s new generation Steam Controller was officially launched in early May, it was completely sold out in just 30 minutes, catching many players off guard. To solve this problem, instead of letting players wait for restocking, Valve directly made the CAD files of the controller and its exclusive accessory Puck’s casing fully public within less than 48 hours after its launch. Anyone can download, modify, and even 3D print it themselves for free. This move not only quickly resolved the dissatisfaction caused by the shortage, but also once again demonstrated Valve’s consistent style in the hardware openness strategy.

Released in both STP and STL formats, players can download and print by themselves

According to Valve on the Steam Hardware CommunityOfficial announcement, this open content covers the “surface topology” CAD files of Steam Controller and Puck. In terms of file format, Valve provides both STP (solid model with parameter information) and STL (mesh model suitable for rapid 3D printing) versions, allowing both professional designers and general players to find a format that suits them.

For the license agreement, Valve chose Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 4.0 (Name Attribution—Noncommercial—Share Alike). This means that players around the world can freely modify the design, print it themselves and share it with the community, as long as the original source is noted and no commercial sales are involved. For sub-factory partners who are interested in mass production and sales, Valve stated that they can separately negotiate commercial authorization, retaining a clear business path for the third-party accessories market.

Puck: 16g multifunctional wireless receiving and charging stand

Another highlight of this opening is the “Steam Controller Puck”: this small accessory that weighs only 16 grams plays multiple roles. It is not only a high-performance wireless receiver that supports the exclusive 2.4 GHz protocol (end-to-end delay is about 8ms, and can connect to 4 sets of devices at the same time), but it is also a charging base with magnetic automatic adsorption function.

It is worth mentioning that Valve specifically marked “Keep-out zones” in the CAD files. Since Puck integrates a highly sensitive RF antenna and exclusive magnetic charging contacts, if certain paths are accidentally blocked during 3D printing modification, wireless signal quality and charging efficiency may be affected. This approach of making hardware design restrictions transparent greatly reduces the trial and error costs for third-party developers when designing accessories.

Valve’s Hardware Opening Formula: Replicating the Successful Experience of Steam Deck

This is not the first time Valve has released hardware CAD files. As early as 2022, when Steam Deck was launched, Valve adopted the exact same strategy, which ultimately gave rise to the rise of well-known sub-factory accessory brands such as JSAUX and dbrand, and accumulated thousands of free user-made designs in 3D printing communities such as Printables.

From a business logic point of view, Valve’s intentions are quite clear: the company has no intention of making profits by selling plastic stands or charging bases. Instead, it “outsources” the development rights of hardware accessories to the world’s most creative player community by opening CAD files. When players can design and print their own car mounts, desktop racks, or customized cases, the application scenarios of Steam Controller will be greatly expanded, thereby strengthening the overall stickiness of the Steam ecosystem.

New products are out of stock immediately after they are launched, and players respond enthusiastically

The new generation of Steam Controller sparked a rush of sales as soon as it was launched. According to foreign reports, the first batch of inventory sold out within 30 minutes of going on sale, forcing Valve to urgently increase production. The biggest innovation of this controller is the use of TMR (tunnel magnetoresistance) magnetic induction technology to replace the physical contact structure of the traditional analog joystick. It not only has a longer life and higher accuracy, but also completely gets rid of the most criticized “drift” problem of traditional joysticks.

In addition, the new controller supports driver-less plug-and-play directly at the firmware level, making it easy to plug in and get started on Steam Deck, Windows PC, or Linux systems. This cross-platform design, coupled with Valve’s recent update to include full controller support in the Steam client, makes this controller not only a powerful tool for gamers, but also a popular choice for home-made game consoles and emulator players.

This wave of operations by Valve once again proves a trend: when the original manufacturer is willing to release hardware design files, the hardware is no longer just a “finished product”, but an open platform that can continue to evolve.
