DDR5 memory has already caused consumers to complain due to high prices. Now a batch of “fake RAM” has appeared on the market, making the overall situation even more confusing. Several recent reports from the Asian PC market have pointed out that counterfeit DDR5 memory is rapidly spreading in online stores and gray channels. The degree of counterfeiting is even high enough to look fake, and even the plastic blocks that imitate DRAM chips can be made lifelike.
Unscrupulous people use realistic DDR5 RAM plastic models to defraud buyers
Most of these fakes are disguised as genuine memories from major manufacturers such as Samsung or SK Hynix, and everything from labels, serial number stickers to outer packaging are completely copied. Some SO‑DIMM notebook memories even have plastic parts directly attached to the PCB to simulate the appearance and arrangement of DRAM chips. At first glance, it is almost impossible to tell the authenticity. What’s even more shocking is that some fake memories have openly appeared on e-commerce platforms such as Yahoo Japan, and are sold under the names of “welfare products” and “untested”. The sellers also specifically indicate that they do not accept returns, as if they have already expected that buyers will be disappointed.

What happens after the actual disassembly is even more worrying. Some fake memories don’t work at all, others claim 16GB of capacity when in reality they may be 4GB or less. Some counterfeiters recycle old chips or use low-quality chips and hide them under relabeled heat sinks; others simply make them look good without any real memory function, just to fool first inspection.

The timing of the proliferation of fakes is no coincidence. The price of DDR5 has risen sharply in the past year. The main reason is that AI has driven a surge in demand for enterprise-class memory, and manufacturers have also given priority to supplying the server and accelerator markets, resulting in tight supply of consumer-grade DDR5 and rising prices. As memory becomes more and more valuable, counterfeiters are naturally attracted to take advantage of the opportunity, especially in areas that rely on third-party sellers, parallel imports or second-hand markets.
To make matters more troubling, memory is not as easy to check as GPUs and CPUs. After most people install their computer, they rarely remove the memory to check the chip model. Desktop DDR5 memory kits are usually equipped with large heat sinks that completely cover the chip underneath, making it almost impossible to conduct an external inspection. Unless the system fails to boot, crashes frequently, or someone is willing to dismantle the heat sink, it will be difficult for the average consumer to realize that they are buying a fake. For experienced players or assemblers, authenticity can still be judged through PCB workmanship, solder joint quality, label details, or chip arrangement. However, these skills are not easy for ordinary users to master, not to mention that counterfeiting technology is rapidly evolving, and the appearance simulation is getting higher and higher, making it difficult to identify with the naked eye alone.
This is the most disturbing part of the whole incident: Fake memories are no longer crude and cheap imitations, but have gradually become sophisticated and realistic enough to deceive consumers in a short period of time, until serious problems occur in the system. As DDR5 prices continue to rise, there will likely be more and more of these fakes, which will have a greater impact on consumers and market trust.
