There are many ways you can improve Windows Computer performance, such as turning on fast boot, reducing the number of applications running in the background, changing performance mode, etc. In addition, you can also improve computer performance by deleting unnecessary files to free up some storage space. But, have you ever wondered what exactly happens to files when you delete them from your Windows computer?

What happens when you delete a profile on Windows? Can you restore it?

Files are made up of lots of information, and when you add a file to your computer, it is physically written to your computer’s hard drive. When you delete the file, the disc is not actually unwritten and completely deleted. Instead, the file is still there, you just can’t see it. Additionally, Windows will display the amount of space it takes up that can be overwritten by other files, and it will overwrite deleted archives when you add new archives to that location in the future.

This overwriting of data content is only relevant for traditional hard drives. The SSD performs the deletion as you would expect, completely deleting the file when you press the Delete or Shift + Del keys on your keyboard. You may be wondering why traditional hard drives don’t completely delete files, and whether deleted files can be recovered. Let’s continue the discussion below.

If you are a long-term Windows user, you must have encountered the situation of accidentally deleting files. If the file was downloaded from the Internet, just download it again; but when you delete important files that are not available from anywhere else, things get more complicated. To help you in this situation, Windows follows the method of incomplete deletion of files and if the new files do not overwrite the deleted files, you can use dedicated data recovery products like DiskGenius or EaseUS Data Recovery. Additionally, if you delete the file temporarily, that is, by selecting the file and simply pressing the Delete key instead of Shift+Delete, you can restore it from the Recycle Bin.

However, Windows not completely deleting files can be seen from another angle, and this is the angle you need to pay attention to. If a bad actor gains access to your computer, they can use a recovery application to access files you thought were deleted from your computer. To ensure that something like this doesn’t happen to you, you can use a data erasure tool like SysTools to completely remove it from Windows. The disadvantage is that you may not be able to recover accidentally deleted files, so don’t rely on this type of tool and only use it to delete sensitive files that cannot be exported.
